John Woodruff, "Interior #111" (limited edition print).

Trained as a biologist, John turned to photography early on. Throughout his commercial photography career, he never stopped working on personal series and showing his art throughout the East Coast.

Art doesn’t always have to give us answers.
John Woodruff’s photographs hover between the recognizable and the abstract, constantly shifting our sense of scale and place.

John Woodruff trained in biology before switching to photography. He began his career working with 8x10 and 4x5 large-format cameras.

Alongside his commercial work, Woodruff developed his fine-art practice. His recent series, Interiors / Exteriors, brings together his background in biology, architectural photography, and a longstanding interest in abstraction.

John Woodruff’s photographs reveal themselves differently depending on where you stand.
From across a room: fields of color and light.
Move closer: lines, textures and structures begin to emerge.
And yet the images never quite explain themselves.

Soft, luminous and deliberately elusive.
John Woodruff’s photographs transform details of the natural world into abstract images that retain their mystery whether viewed from across a room or up close.

There is a connection in John Woodruff’s work that I find particularly fascinating.
John studied biology before photography. Decades later, he is still looking closely at the natural world—only now through a camera.

His subjects can be extremely ordinary: moss, lichen, rock. But through enlargement, blur and shifts in scale, they become almost impossible to identify.

There is something about the experience that reminds me of looking through a microscope as a child: the surprise of discovering that a familiar thing contains an entirely unfamiliar world.

What happens when scale disappears?

A small fragment of nature can begin to resemble a landscape.
Color becomes atmosphere.
And photography begins to look like painting.

John Woodruff’s photographs play with one of our most basic visual instincts: our need to understand scale.
In his series, Interiors/Exteriors, familiar materials become mysterious, luminous worlds that sit somewhere between photography and abstraction.

Now exhibiting at Aurelie’s Gallery (link in bio).
