I looked at her paintings.
Her work made me feel good and soft inside,
made me experience a sense of connection,
like all my hidden parts were represented.

Somehow it feels free from ego.

Under the guise of apophasis

I realised the other day that, in my prose, I often use the word “heart” — and it made my stomach turn with shame. It felt like spilling kisses all over town, or prostituting kindness. I felt like an exhibitionist, with his breast pocket unbuttoned and his heart pulled out, exposed on his sleeve.

Consequently, I found a theory to explain the psychology behind my writing style: in order to make up for the obvious — the cheesiness — I use spiky syllables and metaphors to diffuse simplicity, too juvenile to bear. Like a lychee — not to lapse into a cliché — she’s soft tissue wrapped in a spiked jacket: my bare heart catching cold, I cover her with a blanket of language.

Also, there’s a strategy behind it: I write in riddles to help you find “the Heart” inside the pile of hearts.

It’s not in my power to direct you home (directly), only sideways: via viaducts, reductio ad absurdum, adjectives, and the complex infrastructure of pocket bouquets; through back alleys, projection, and the fruits of passion. I can’t walk you through: you’re behind the wheel, you’ll have to do the navigating. I can only place markers along the road.

To help you find your way back to the Heart inside the pile — the dumpster, the Instagram feed, the brothel — of hearts.

I’ll disclose in confidence: I never write without a double motive. Beneath it lies a quiet propaganda. Just look up the most used word — the one that echoes, predominates, resonates, beats? Which has been the protagonist, all along, under the guise of apophasis?
