« Lumière sur monde » lately I am systematically asking Sri Aurobindo to give me a title and a quote from his incredibly powerful poème Savitri who relate the story of the earth and humanity. I open the book at random and read…
Surendered to the greatWorld-Mother’s hands, only she obeyed her sole supreme behest in the Enigma of the Inconscient’s world…A light comes down into the Ignorance.
Dans cette énigme du monde de l’Inconscient s’abandonnant entre les mains de la Mère du Monde, elle obéissait seulement à son seul ordre suprême…
Une Lumière descend dans l’Ignorance. #aurovillartists #artgallery #artcollector #casadamordesign #auroartworld taken in Auroville : The Future of World in India by @auroville.arts

For those who missed the maiden voyage of RANIGAMA- the Noborigama (kiln) at @phoenix__studios on 20 August 2026, here’s a glimpse of this special exhibition.

RANIGAMA is a Japanese-style climbing kiln and a relatively unusual addition to India’s contemporary ceramics landscape.

A noborigama, or “climbing kiln”, is a traditional Japanese wood-fired kiln built as a series of chambers rising up a slope. As the fire travels through the chambers, the heat, flames, ash and atmosphere interact with the works in different ways, creating effects that cannot be entirely predicted or controlled. One of the fascinating things about a noborigama is that the kiln becomes a collaborator in the making of each piece.

Featured here is the stunning RANIGAMA kiln at the beginning of the video and the remarkable range of works that emerged from its maiden firing; each carrying its own response to the fire, heat, ash and atmosphere. From subtle surfaces and delicate variations to bold textures and unexpected transformations, the firing has brought forth a wonderfully diverse body of work.

We congratulate all the artists @shivani_sekar @artegue_byshivanisekar @hanacassime @lostwhooo @drshylajas @universe_bystudiounicorn @veeshapottery @tharhun_viji @sathya.ganapathi @claylores.sathya @saraswatiunlimited and the team at Phoenix Studios on this incredible feat, and wish RANIGAMA many more inspiring voyages ahead. ✨💫

K. JANAKIRAMAN @auroville.artforland

Born in Pondicherry, K. Janakiraman began with realistic painting before moving towards abstract expression. From the late 1990s to 2002, he created a remarkable body of large-scale oil paintings with a surreal, dreamlike quality. Moving beyond visible reality, these works explore inner landscapes and the space between form and formlessness. Their monumental scale creates an immersive experience, inviting us to look beyond the familiar.

The works presented here are from this important period of his practice and reflect an aspiration towards new dimensions of perception and experience. Janakiraman continues to evolve as an artist and now works primarily in watercolour, embracing a more fluid and subtle language of expression.

A selection of Janakiraman’s works from this early period are part of the Auroville Art Collection, preserved as part of Auroville’s growing artistic and cultural archive.

His works are currently on view in the Art for Land exhibition FROM ASPIRATION TO INSPIRATION, @unitypavilion offering a glimpse into the artist’s search for beauty, exploration of the inner being, and openness to higher realms of consciousness through art.

On view until Saturday, 10 October 2026

📍Unity Pavilion, International Zone, Auroville
Monday–Saturday | 9:30 AM–5:00 PM

From the opening ceremony of the Art for Land exhibition FROM ASPIRATION TO INSPIRATION on August 16th @unitypavilion with lovely interactive, experimental music by Sergei, Slava, Karthik and Dimitri

Presented during the commemorative period of Sri Aurobindo’s Birthday and India’s Independence Day, this exhibition reflects on the relationship between aspiration and inspiration. It also celebrates the spirit that gave birth to Auroville- a place founded upon humanity’s aspiration for a more conscious and unified future of the world, and a vital hub of artistic expression at the service of consciousness.

Featuring works by Ashramite Usha Patel, Auroville artist Crystal Michielsen, and Pondiherry artist Janakiraman, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into each artist’s aspiration and inspiration; their search for beauty, their exploration of the inner being and its many facets, and their openness to higher realms of consciousness as expressed through art.

We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition at Unity Pavilion on show till SATURDAY October 10th 2026.

📍Unity Pavilion, International Zone, Auroville
Monday – Saturday 9.30 AM – 05.00 PM
