The Commonwealth connects countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific. Australia’s connection to the Commonwealth is deep and enduring – 3.3 million Australians were born in another Commonwealth country, which connects us through families, businesses, culture, and sport.

Australia shares a long-standing partnership with Nigeria and other Commonwealth States in West and Central Africa, grounded in these same Commonwealth values. Together, we work to promote economic growth, support democratic institutions, invest in people-to-people connections, and address shared regional and global challenges.

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda #CHOGM2026, Australia is working closely with partners across the Commonwealth to uphold our shared values and strengthen international cooperation.

For Australia, the Commonwealth remains an important platform for middle-power diplomacy and collective action. It enables countries like Australia and Nigeria to work together to tackle common challenges, seize new opportunities, and protect what matters most: our people, our planet, and the rules that keep us all safe.

Ahead of COP31 in Türkiye, MIKTA Heads of Mission 🇲🇽 🇮🇩 🇰🇷 🇹🇷 🇦🇺 brought together Nigerian government, civil society and private sector representatives in Abuja to discuss climate priorities and consider a critical question: how do we make climate finance more accessible in practice?

With Türkiye as COP31 President and Australia as President of Negotiations, the discussion focused on turning climate ambition into practical outcomes.

High Commissioner Leilani Bin-Juda emphasised that better access is about more than mobilising additional resources. It is about ensuring the international climate-finance system works for countries with different circumstances and capacities, particularly those most vulnerable to climate change.

Thank you to @EmbassyofTürkiyeinNigeria for hosting👏

🏐Coming Home to Nigeria 🇳🇬

The Australian High Commission was proud to support Coming Home, bringing NSW Swifts and Silver Ferns star Grace Nweke to Nigeria for the first time to reconnect with her heritage and help inspire the next generation of netballers.

Together with former Australian Diamond Carissa Tombs OAM, Grace joined young players, coaches and sporting leaders in Lagos for a week of clinics, coaching and engagement, with a strong focus on opportunities for women and girls.

Developed by TalentLockr Africa, in partnership with the Lagos State Netball Association, Nike and Australia’s Netball Development Academy, Coming Home is helping build lasting connections between Australian and Nigerian netball.

🇦🇺🤝🇳🇬Sport has a special way of bringing people together, and we’re excited to see where this partnership goes next.

For young people with ambitions to serve their communities, the journey into public leadership can begin with a simple commitment to making a difference.

We asked the Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Milton Dick, what advice he would give to young people aspiring to become Members of Parliament or public leaders.

Do you have adequate health insurance for your stay in Australia?

Many Australian visas require applicants and visa holders to maintain adequate health insurance while they are in Australia.

As most temporary visa holders and visitors are not eligible for Australia’s Medicare system, you may be responsible for all healthcare costs during your stay. Having appropriate private health insurance can help ensure you're covered.

To help you understand your obligations, we've updated our guidance and published a new factsheet on adequate health insurance requirements for visa applicants and visa holders.

Nigeria is helping accelerate Rugby League in Africa!🇳🇬🏉

Congratulations to Nigeria on becoming the first African nation selected for International Rugby League's Accelerator Nation program. This milestone reflects the remarkable growth of Rugby League in Nigeria and supports the Nigeria Rugby League Association's vision of bringing the world to Nigeria through sport.

That ambition has an exciting backdrop as the Rugby League World Cup 2026 gets underway in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. From 15 October to 15 November, teams will compete across the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments.

Australia is proud to support the growth of Rugby League in Nigeria and the sporting connections it is building between our countries and communities.🇦🇺🇳🇬

From Abuja, we'll be tuning in and cheering on the action throughout the tournament.

Having a strong idea is one thing. Communicating clearly enough to gain understanding and support is another.

Hauwa Bako from Nigeria hopes to use skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, and negotiation to engage women farmers, contribute to policy discussions, and bring more stakeholders behind her ideas.

Through science communication, proposal writing, and leadership development, the Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship supports women researchers to strengthen the influence of their technical work.

What does it take to turn technical expertise into greater influence in shaping agrifood systems?

Technical expertise is essential to developing solutions for #ClimateResponsive agriculture. But creating wider impact also requires confidence, strong communication and negotiation skills, and professional networks.

The Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship supports women researchers to strengthen their leadership capacity and expand their networks to help drive change.

“Technical expertise alone is not enough to move things forward.”

For Latifa Seroukh, the Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship is more than training. It is a network of experienced African women and a community that supports the transition from technical expertise to strategic leadership.

The two-year Fellowship offers leadership development, mentoring, and opportunities for collaboration, networking, and visibility.

“Are you okay?”

More than a question, it is an invitation to seek help and a reminder that no one should struggle alone.

Creating safe spaces for people to seek support is essential.

To support this goal, we partnered with the Norwegian Embassy, Her Excellency Toyin Saraki, and the Lifeline Foundation to host an important dialogue on suicide prevention in Nigeria 🇳🇬, as the country moves towards decriminalising attempted suicide.

The roundtable brought together policymakers, clinicians, advocates, and international partners to share insights, strengthen collaboration, and improve support for those in need.
