This past fall, Thea Duc (SOC / BA ’25), a Public Relations and Strategic Communications major, received the honor for her work as an event intern at Stratus Firm.

For Christina Alemayehu (SOC/MA ‘25), pursuing her online MA in Strategic Communication is about more than just a degree—it’s about living out a purpose-driven life that fuses communication strategy with community and faith.

As a leader in the Global Youth Mission Movement, Christina mentors East African diaspora youth, organizes mission trips to Ethiopia, and builds spaces for spiritual growth. At SOC, she’s found the tools to amplify her impact through strategic storytelling, branding, and advocacy.

📖 From launching campaigns to publishing her first book, Christina is living proof that purpose and profession can work hand-in-hand.

Congratulations to the Golden State Valkyries General Manager and former AU athlete Ohemaa Nyanin (SIS-SOC/BA ’09, SPA/MS ’11) for taking her team to the WNBA finals in only its second year as a franchise! 🥳 🏀

Last April, #AUSOC hosted @msohemz for an American Forum conversation with students moderated by SOC professor Jane Hall.

Ohemaa shared stories from her inspiring journey from a walk-on basketball player at AU to a becoming an executive in the WNBA.

Join us for Black in Academia: Interrogating the Black Graduate Experience in the Ivory Tower being held on Friday Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in room 113 in McKinley in the @ausoc. This truthful conversation will offer students resources to thrive in academia and space to discuss their encounters in higher education. This event addresses mental health and wellness amid recent incidents involving Black academics. Be sure to visit 'ROHO,' a photo exhibit from Samantha Jaffe (SOC '27) about her study abroad experience in Kenya through the AU Abroad Nairobi program. The photos are available to view through October 12 in the Katzen Center.

In her 6 1/2 months there, one of the most formative experiences was spending a month with SHOFCO's Makina Clinic and WASH Department in Kibera, the largest urban informal settlement in Africa. She attended community stakeholder dialogues, conducted door-to-door household surveys, shadowed clinicians, and supported pharmaceutical and laboratory operations. Through this experience she gained a deeper appreciation for both the complexities of Kenya's healthcare system and the vital role community organizations play in expanding access to healthcare and other essential services. by @ausoc
