Eighty-year-old Eugene Bostick of Fort Worth, Texas became an internet sensation after building a homemade train to take rescued and abandoned dogs on rides around his property. Bostick and his brother began caring for stray dogs that were frequently abandoned near their home. Wanting to give the dogs something fun to do, Eugene converted plastic barrels into train cars and attached them to a small tractor, creating a custom train just for his canine passengers. Photos and videos of the happy dogs riding through fields with their ears flapping in the wind quickly went viral around the world. The heartwarming story turned Eugene into a symbol of kindness and showed how a simple idea can dramatically improve the lives of rescued animals. by @aussiesdoingthings
In 2007, Marine Major Brian Dennis met a scruffy, wild dog at a border fort in Iraq. The dog’s ears had been cut off to make him look “tougher,” earning him the name Nubs, but his personality was anything but aggressive. Nubs immediately bonded with Dennis’s team, becoming their unofficial mascot and an emotional escape from the drudgery of war. Their friendship was put to the ultimate test when Dennis’s unit was reassigned to a new post over 70 miles away. Because military rules strictly forbid keeping pets, Dennis had to leave Nubs behind, watching through his rearview mirror as the dog chased the convoy until it disappeared into the desert dust. Two days later, the impossible happened. A Marine ran into the battalion headquarters to tell Dennis he wouldn’t believe who was outside. Against all odds, Nubs had tracked the unit across 75 miles of dangerous, war-torn terrain in freezing temperatures. No one knows exactly how he navigated the desert, but the moment he saw Dennis, he went wild with joy. The bond was now unbreakable, but the trouble wasn’t over. Someone reported the dog to the higher-ups, and Dennis was given a final order: get rid of the dog or else. Unwilling to leave his friend to die, Dennis launched an $5,000 mission to smuggle Nubs out of the country and into the United States. The internet rallied behind the Marine and his “Miracle Mutt,” providing the funds to get Nubs to Jordan, then Chicago, and finally to San Diego. After months of red tape and a journey halfway around the world, Nubs finally traded the sounds of war for a couch in California. He had to adjust to civilian life, but today, he’s just a happy pet who enjoys napping while his best friend pets his abbreviated ears. It’s a viral reminder that loyalty knows no borders and that sometimes, a dog will literally walk across a country just to be by your side. by @aussiesdoingthings
Everyone assumed the little dog lived in total darkness, barely reacting when people called out or tried to guide him, until the moment he finally turned his head with perfect clarity and revealed he simply had no interest in engaging. What looked like a disability was really a display of selective attention that surprised everyone around him. The misunderstanding began when rescuers noticed he walked confidently yet never responded to voices or movement. Veterinary checks showed no immediate issues, and his calm silence was taken as confirmation that he could not see. Weeks later during a routine exam, a specialist observed his eyes tracking light with precision. The team ran through a series of tests and found his vision completely intact. The truth emerged when shelter workers tried calling him again and he continued to ignore them, only reacting when food was involved. Records from early February showed that he had learned to block out most human cues after inconsistent interactions in his previous home. Once handlers shifted to gentler routines, he started acknowledging people selectively, making it clear he wasn’t blind at all. He was just choosing when to care. The revelation quickly turned into a reminder of how easily behavior can imitate something far more serious. Sometimes the funniest part of a story is how confidently we jump to conclusions. Meet Bear. He blended into a golden retriever meetup so flawlessly that even other goldens were fooled. We’d point him out

In 2017, a Shell gas station in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, gained a world-famous employee who doesn’t know how to pump gas but is an expert in customer service. Negão was an adult dog who had been heartlessly abandoned at the construction site by his former owners. Too terrified to leave his only home, he roamed the dirt lots until the station’s new owners, Sabrina Plannerer and her partner, decided to adopt him. They didn’t just give him a dog house and medical care; they gave him a permanent position on the team, complete with his very own official employee ID badge. Negão quickly became the face of the business, proving to be a natural-born greeter. Instead of being overwhelmed by the constant bustle of cars and people, he waits for customers to pull up so he can welcome them with a wagging tail and his signature “smile.” The community has fallen in love with their local four-legged staffer, with many regulars stopping by specifically to bring him new toys or treats. Because the station is staffed 24/7, Negão is never alone, always having a coworker nearby for a mid-shift belly rub or a walk through town. His success story sparked a viral movement in Brazil, led by the charity Grupo FERA, which encourages other businesses to “hire” strays who might not fit into a traditional home. Negão has become a living symbol of how a little compassion can turn a “needy” animal into a beloved colleague. Sabrina hopes that by sharing his journey, more business owners will realize that a canine staffer is the ultimate way to boost morale—and customer loyalty. After all, a fill-up is much better when it comes with a friendly “hello” from the sweetest employee in town. by @aussiesdoingthings
Some rescue dogs arrive with challenges that shape their entire first year, and Autumn’s story is one of them. He was born missing a front paw, which meant every ordinary movement asked more of the rest of his body. Instead of letting that limitation settle in, his new family started looking for ways to support him as he grew. What followed was a series of custom prosthetics that didn’t just help him walk more comfortably. They turned him into the kind of dog people stop to watch, partly because of the technology, partly because he carries it all with such ease. Media: @adventuresofautumndog by @aussiesdoingthings
In the quiet rhythm of nearly twenty years together, John Unger and his dog Schoep built a bond that went far beyond ordinary companionship. Schoep came into John’s life as a small puppy, and through some of John’s most challenging years, he remained a steady source of comfort and emotional support. John often said that Schoep had saved him, offering loyalty and stability when he needed it most. As Schoep grew older, severe arthritis began to make even simple movements painful. Walking became difficult, and resting no longer brought relief. Determined to ease his friend’s suffering, John discovered that the natural buoyancy of the lake near their home reduced the pressure on Schoep’s aching joints. Each evening, he would gently carry him into the water, holding him close as they floated together in silence. In the calm of the lake, supported by John’s arms and the water’s lift, Schoep would sometimes drift into a peaceful sleep. The weight that troubled him on land seemed to disappear, replaced by a quiet sense of comfort and safety. What began as a practical solution soon became a deeply meaningful ritual. It was a simple yet profound expression of gratitude, loyalty, and love. In caring for Schoep during his final years, John ensured that the companion who had once saved him would be surrounded by dignity, tenderness, and unwavering devotion until the very end. by @aussiesdoingthings
David Bahnson, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Vermont, found a unique way to share his love of kayaking with his dogs by designing and building a custom kayak specifically for them. After noticing that his first dog, Susie, could comfortably sit in the storage compartment of a kayak he built from a kit, he modified the boat by adding a special opening to keep her dry and secure during their trips. When a second dog, Ginger, joined the family, Bahnson adapted the kayak again, creating an additional space so both dogs could ride comfortably. Each dog had its own dedicated spot, making the experience safer and less awkward than having them sit in the main cockpit. The dogs were trained to get in and out on command and remained calm and seated throughout their journeys. Over the years, Bahnson and his wife paddled many miles with their dogs, creating lasting memories on the water. Although Susie and Ginger have since passed away, the tradition continues with the family’s newer pets. Bahnson’s custom kayak reflects his deep bond with his dogs and his belief that adventures are best enjoyed together. (Images - Linda Bahnson) by @aussiesdoingthings
In June 2025, 9-year-old Cairo “Cai” Hall went viral for wearing a dapper suit and tie to the PAWS Shelter of Central Texas to adopt his first dog, a pit bull mix named Waylon who had waited 95 days for a home.
