The forest is our classroom. A playground for curiosity. Just a glimpse of what is possible. Phase 2 of the food forest is gaining momentum after two years of active land stewardship, planting and cultivation. Last Saturday, dozens of plants were planted to establish an understory of supportive plant guilds for the trees. Friends, I encourage you to go visit the forest. We are hosting a multi-lingual plant walk on October 18th 9a-11a (in partnership with Roots & Wings) Visit festivalbeach.org for more info. We want to thank everyone who joined us at the Fall Equinox Celebration & Solar Cookout on Sunday, September 20th at Festival Beach Food Forest & RBJ Residences! Between the solar cook-off, the expert panel, lotería, kids' activities, and the incredible turnout of neighbors, partners, and volunteers, it was a beautiful celebration of community-led resilience. Events like this only happen because of the generosity of our community and the incredible partner organizations who showed up to share their work. We're so grateful to everyone who brought a dish, participated in the solar cook-off tasting, tabled, volunteered, donated (it’s not too late to make a contribution!), or simply came out to enjoy the day. Thank you all! Thank you again especially to our many partners and sponsors who worked with Fruitful Commons and @austinfoodforest to make this event so special: RBJ Senior Housing @rbjseniorhousing @austinparksfdn @native.solar @fiestatortillas @austincityparks Austin Climate Action and Resilience Austin / Travis County Food Plan Implementation Collaborative @solarcookingmuseum @poder.austin @centraltexasmycology @fbcg_atx @feastforall_stemsignandnacc The Children's Haven Association @thechildrenshaven @solaraustintx @thirdacttexas @asl4sj_atx Barrio Club de Fútbol @barrioclubdefutbol Barrio Radio Live @barrioradiolive – and everyone who helped get the word out! #solarcooking #fallequinox #festivalbeachfoodforest #fruitfulcommons by @austinfoodforest

We need your help making Austin the FIRST major city in Texas to pass a bird-friendly building ordinance! In 2024, the City of Austin passed a resolution directing the City Manager and staff to explore ways the city’s building code could be modified to be more bird-friendly and reduce collisions with buildings. Despite a thorough review of best practices from other cities, public stakeholder meetings, and support from various city commissions, the City Manager requests further data that Austinites WANT and birds NEED this ordinance to pass. How you can help: 1. Sign the petition to let City Council know that you support bird-friendly building design in Austin. 2. Submit any bird collision observations you encounter – whether it’s at home, work, or your weekend errands, it only takes a few minutes and gets us one step closer to making Austin a more bird-friendly community.
