THE FINALE — part 6/6 in the classical intermediate Pilates mat order.

The final sequence of the intermediate classical Pilates mat repertoire brings all of the work together, taking the body through extension, lateral flexion, spinal articulation, balance, and upper-body strength.

Swimming — a fast and rhythmic exercise that uses a 5 count inhale, and 5 count exhale, just like the hundred. Swimming challenges the coordination of the limbs while maintaining extension through the body.

Mermaid — introduces lateral flexion and length through the sides of the waist, while maintaining alignment of the “box” (shoulders, hips, and rib cage).

Seal — builds upon all of the rolling exercises done so far, but in a smaller and condensed shape. This exercise not only challenges the powerhouse and articulation through the spine, it also develops hip dissociation. The claps of the feet are not simply choreography, but train the body to be precise while the limbs move independently of the pelvis.

Seal transition to standing — challenges coordination, balance and control.

Push ups — this method of push ups is an excellent way to train the body to get up and down from the floor with ease and control. The challenge is to maintain a strong centre while building upper body strength. by @austinjamespilates

When Joseph Pilates developed his method, he called it contrology.

THE CLOSING SERIES — part 5/6 in the classical intermediate Pilates mat order.

After the prone series comes a group of exercises that further integrates the work of the powerhouse with spinal articulation, balance, control, and coordinated movement of the entire body. This series asks us to take the strength and stability developed throughout the mat and apply it to more complex and dynamic movements!

Neck Pull — challenges the powerhouse to control the articulation of the spine as the body rolls down and back up. The exercise requires strength through the abdominals while maintaining length through the spine and control throughout the entire movement.

Shoulder Bridge Prep — focused on spinal articulation, preparing the body for unilateral work in the advanced series. This exercise requires articulation while maintaining stability through the pelvis and powerhouse.

Jackknife — builds on the spinal articulation and powerhouse control developed throughout the mat. The hips lift overhead through the strength of the abdominals and posterior chain, requiring control to roll down through the spine, vertebrae by vertebrae.

Side Kicks — brings the work into the lateral plane, challenging the stability of the pelvis while the legs move independently. The series develops strength and control through the hips while requiring the torso and pelvis to remain stable. This exercise could be a series in and of itself, with all of its many variations!

Teaser — brings together the strength, control, balance, and spinal articulation developed throughout the entire mat. The body works as one integrated unit as the spine rounds into flexion while the legs and torso balance in opposition, demanding complete control from the powerhouse. by @austinjamespilates

Let the work speak for itself.

In my opinion, the Wunda Chair is one of the most challenging pieces of Pilates apparatus. There’s nowhere to hide within its small, concentrated space. Every movement demands precision, control, and a deep connection to the work.

It’s a piece that quickly reveals where you have strength, and where you still have work to do. by @austinjamespilates
