alt-j’s breezeblocks explores a destructive obsession in which the desire to keep someone is so intense it turns violent. the band connects this to the primal ending of maurice sendak’s book, explaining that “the song is about liking someone who you want so much that you want to hurt yourself and them, as well. we related that idea to where the wild things are, which we all grew up reading, where in the end the beasts say ‘oh, please don’t go! we’ll eat you whole! we love you so!’ that they would threaten cannibalism to have that person. it’s a powerful image.”

warp records’ 100th release, we are reasonable people (wap100), was released in 1998 as a celebration of the label’s growing catalog and influence on electronic music. founded in sheffield in 1989 by steve beckett, rob mitchell, and robert gordon, warp began with early rave and techno releases before becoming one of the defining labels of the idm movement. the compilation features artists including aphex twin, autechre, boards of canada, squarepusher, broadcast, mira calix, and plone. its cd booklet and vinyl gatefold included a detailed catalog of releases from wap1–wap99 and warp1–warp55, making it both a compilation and a guide to warp’s history. the artwork, created by the designers republic, continued the label’s distinctive futuristic aesthetic. the release also featured the rare collaboration between aphex twin and squarepusher, “freeman, hardy & willis acid,” making wap100 an important document of warp’s early history and evolution.

in the united states, civil helicopters averaged about 118 accidents and 37 deaths per year from 2015 through 2024. roughly one out of every six helicopter accidents was fatal. some of the most recognizable victims include kobe bryant, who died with his daughter gianna in 2020, oliver tree, who died in a helicopter collision in brazil this year, colin morae, steve allen and davey allison. what makes these stories so haunting is how young and successful many of these people were. their deaths are heartbreaking, but remembering them can also be a way of keeping something alive. their music, their talent, their families, their accomplishments, and the moments they gave to other people. grief reminds us how fragile life is, but it can also make the time we do have feel more meaningful. to keep creating, keep loving, and keep moving forward while carrying the people we’ve lost with us. rest in peace to these legends and may they continue to inspire us.
