A big week for the Australia–Japan partnership 🇦🇺🇯🇵

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Australia–Japan Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, a milestone that reflects one of Australia’s most enduring and trusted economic relationships.

That partnership was on full display this week across Japan, with Treasurer of Australia Dr Jim Chalmers and Austrade CEO Dr Paul Grimes engaging across government, business and investment to strengthen cooperation, advance shared priorities and explore new opportunities for growth.

From the Australia–Japan Joint Business Conference, to an Austrade-led institutional investor delegation representing more than A$1.5 trillion in assets under management, and an Australian delegation to BioJapan 2026 powered by the Accessing New Markets Initiative (ANMI) program, the week showcased the breadth and depth of collaboration between our two countries.

Several key themes emerged throughout the week:

✅ Complexity: As industries navigate economic transition, decarbonisation, technological disruption and evolving supply chains, there is growing demand for partners that can bring together diverse expertise, capabilities and perspectives to solve shared challenges.

✅ Confidence: Australia continues to be viewed as a trusted and reliable partner for trade, investment and long-term collaboration, underpinned by strong economic fundamentals, stability, and shared values.

✅ Co-creation: Australian and Japanese businesses are increasingly moving beyond traditional trade relationships to jointly develop solutions, accelerate innovation and unlock new commercial opportunities.

✅ Convergence: Australia and Japan are aligning around shared priorities across investment, energy, technology, life sciences and economic security, creating new opportunities for two-way growth, knowledge exchange and collaboration which will shape the next chapter of our economic partnership. by @austradeofficial

Singapore’s @atomionics has landed in Australia, trialling its innovative quantum sensors with the country’s largest miners.

The deep-tech company’s GravioTM quantum sensor and AI geologist, ORE-OTM work in tandem to create detailed 3D models of the Earth’s subsurface. The models contain detailed geophysical snapshots of everything beneath the surface: resource locations, earthquake data, volcanic activity and more.

Resource-rich Australia was the perfect place for Atomionics to trial its technology. After winning the coveted Croc Pitch grand prize of A$500,000 at the Darwin Innovation Hub, the company set up its operations centre in the Northern Territory.

Atomionics has already formed new partnerships. Large-scale operators like BHP’s Ventures initiative are putting Gravio to the test, which will help find critical minerals like copper, lithium and nickel that are in high demand for the energy transition.

‘Our groundbreaking technology puts Australia at the forefront of sustainable mining solutions, transforming the future of resource discovery and directly contributing to Australia’s economic growth and technological leadership,’ says Sahil Tapiawala, Atomionics’ CEO and Co-founder.

Mining Indonesia 2026 brought together mining companies, contractors, technology providers, industry associations and government stakeholders from across Southeast Asia. The event created valuable opportunities for Australian mining equipment, technology and services (METS) companies to strengthen existing relationships, build new commercial connections, and better understand the evolving needs of Indonesia's mining sector.

This year, Austrade partnered with @austmine a Trade Diversification Network member, to support Australian METS companies looking to export to the region through the Accessing New Market Initiative (ANMI).

Discussions throughout the week reinforced the strong alignment between Australia's METS capabilities and Indonesia's focus on improving productivity, safety, sustainability and efficient performance.

Key takeaways from a busy week in Jakarta:

⚙️Indonesian mining companies are seeking technologies that improve productivity, operational efficiency, safety, sustainability and mine site digitalisation.

🤝Business matching meetings at the Australia Business Lounge confirmed a strong interest in Australian expertise and innovative mining solutions, particularly where suppliers can demonstrate successful implementation and measurable operational benefits.

🪏The Austmine-led Meet the Miner program provided valuable access to mining company representatives and decision makers, enabling deeper discussions on challenges and requirements.

💬Relationship building remains critical to success in Indonesia, from face-to-face engagement to regular market visits. Relationships are crucial to build trust and credibility, and to influence and strengthen decision making processes.

Indonesia remains one of Australia's most important METS markets, and the momentum generated throughout the week reinforces the significant opportunities ahead for deeper partnerships.

Thanks to the Investment NSW, @tradeinvestqld, and Invest and Trade Western Australia for supporting the Australia Business Lounge and associated networking activities.
