Welcome to Authentically Odd!

My name is Kelly (or Kel) and this is the new home of all my creations.

I’m a neurodivergent, disabled, lgbtq+ artist and nothing speaks to me in life quite like creating things does. My main focus is hand embroidery but you can likely expect to see other crafts here and there along the way.

I put off making this account for quite some time because I felt like everything had to be “perfect” (whatever that means). Since then, I’ve reflected and realized how limiting the fear of mistakes and failure can be and that I’d like to try and grow beyond that.

Nothing will ever be perfect - but it will be odd. And it can be authentic.

When naming my business I wanted a name that not only represented my creations, but felt like it represented me as a person as well. I have a strong desire to both live and create authentically, even (or especially) if it’s a little bit odd.

So, Authentically Odd was born.

This wall hanging was made as a gift for a fellow Nightmare Before Christmas fan. It’s always fun to try and bring classic characters to life through embroidery.

Tiny fruit turtles🍉🥝🍊🍋

I’ve started working with clay again for the first time in years & this was the first project idea that came to my mind. I had some fruit patterned beads laying around and thought they’d make the cutest little pendants. I was right - they are absolutely adorable.

- Made with beads & oven bake clay
- Coated with UV resin for shine & added strength
- 3 of each fruit currently available

A fun fact about my art journey: In elementary school I had a small stand at my local farmers market. The first pieces I ever made to sell were ploymer clay & beaded jewelry pieces (along with home baked brownies & fresh lemonade). So in a way, I owe my first entrepreneurial inspirations to clay work!
It’s neat to take a journey back to where it all started & I’m excited to bring back a medium that I’ve set aside over the past years.

These are the first non-embroidered pieces I’m posting here on this account but they definitely won’t be the last. While embroidery is my main art form, I don’t intend to stay confined to it being the only thing that I create and share with you.
I hope you’ll enjoy the variety & stick around to see what else is coming in the future!

Kill Your Fear🔪

Sometimes fear can help keep us safe but other times it helps keep us stuck. Lately I’ve been trying my best to fight back against the unhelpful fears & the things that keep me from stepping out of my comfort zone to possibly open the door for bigger and better things. I recommend trying the same thing - remaining stagnant isn’t the life we were meant to live.

This piece was a fun custom project that I made as a gift for a friend that loves Viagra Boys.

- Full lyrics to the song Sports by @viagraboys
- 15 hours of hand embroidery work done using backstitching

If you want your favorite lyrics put onto a piece of clothing, I’d be happy to do more pieces like this in the future!
(I’m imagining a sweatshirt with lyrics on the back and a band name on the front…anyone else see the vision?)

I’ve been wanting to make this Bobby design for awhile now and with the theme this month being tote bags, what better time than now? And Hank and Bobby make such a perfect pair I had to stitch him up too. I had a lot of fun with these!

This piece was a custom project made for a friend. I offered to do some embroidery of their choice as a birthday gift and this was the design they chose.

- Hand embroidered iron on patch

I restarted this project three separate times before getting a quality that i was pleased with. Trying to make a perfect satin stitch circle by hand is a real challenge.😅 The final result here certainly isn’t perfect but i’d like to think that adds to the character.

Here’s a look at the jacket I designed for the first WAVES event this month! It’ll be available to view or purchase at Goody Mart on Bank St until the end of April.

This jacket was a serious lesson of patience, compromise and adjusting expectations. Nothing seemed to want to go the way that I’d expected while creating this piece.

- Upcycled Levi’s (estimated size medium)
- Hand dyed to change color from light blue to black
- Over 40 hours of hand embroidery work

The biggest thanks to @sssnakeboooy, @goodymartottawa & @downtownunderground613 for organizing and hosting this event - it’s so appreciated! And an additional thank you to everyone that encouraged or supported me in the process of bringing this piece to life, it means the world to me.
