People sometimes ask where I get my block print ideas from. And the answer is while logging miles nature. I run at least four miles several times a week and I walk my dog, Maggie, every day. It’s how I ground myself and take care of my mental health. And on those daily outings I have developed a close relationship with nature. When I see something that catches my eye I’ll stop and take a photo for video and then figure out how I can carve it and make it into a block print. Living in the southwest U.S. has meant endless ideas. So the simple answer is: Nature and good old fashioned exercise inspires my art. ✨

Turning art that doesn’t sell into art that does can sometimes mean giving a design second look.

Here are some things you can try before giving up on a project you love:

Change the colors. Add some. Switch them up.
Make it bigger or smaller
Add or take away text
Change the format and putting it on cards or stickers instead of just prints.

As artists we can get attached to our vision of how we want something to be. But if we can just let go of that and open our minds to other possibilities sometimes it will become a new favorite.

And sometimes the design doesn’t need to be changed at all, it just needs to be reintroduced.

When you need a photo of your art market booth for an art market application but you’re only been in one market … you set one up at home and pretend.

I used the Z layout with two six foot tables and a 4 foot table in the middle. The footprint of my setup is 10x10. I got a bunch of the easels, wooden boxes, and metal stands second-hand.

What should I do differently? Would you stop and check out my handmade block prints?

That first hand pulled print on a new carving is unlike anything else. It’s magical. And it never gets old.

Snail mail lets someone know you thought about them and that it was intentional. My handmade block printed cards are based off some of my best-selling prints. When you order, you’ll receive a roadrunner, a prickly pear, and a ristra. Each come with a brown paper envelope. The inside is blank so you can personalize it. Make someone’s day with a little mail that isn’t junk or a bill. It’s the little things✨

Block printing may be for you if…
You love working with your hands.
You want to slow down and be in the moment.
You want to partake in an ancient craft. The first block print is said to be from the 7th century.
You enjoy experimenting and learning through trial and error.
You want a new hobby that doesn’t need batteries or a screen.
You want a new way to express yourself.

Did I miss any? Let me know why you are drawn to block printing or printmaking in general.

They say you take all the people and places with you everywhere you go and while that’s true, it doesn’t hurt to have a daily reminder. As someone who has moved over two dozen times, I created this block print series of maps that you personalize to reflect your favorite spots. Each one is handmade with love from someone who knows the joys and struggles of moving.

Do you talk to yourself when you’re making art or is it just me lol. I have a feeling I’m not the only printmaker or artist that does this. At least I hope so haha.

Handmade art takes time. Especially block printing where you need to draw and carve before using any ink. The slowness and intention behind each pass with the carving tools and with each hand pulled press means each piece of art is unique. And that’s what makes it so special.

The best things in life are made slowly. By the time my block prints are signed and packaged for shipping they’ve been in my hands numerous times. I love sending little pieces of me out into the world. If you love color, nature and handmade art you’ve come to the right place.
