SERVED COLD is the third book in the award-winning Detective Nathan Parker series. Desert violence, desert politics, and who’s caught in between.

When a cargo trailer packed with dead undocumented migrants is found abandoned in a freeway rest stop, Detective Nathan Parker soon discovers the dead wore identical clothing, were the same age, and weren’t destined for the fields. Parker uncovers a diabolical connection between the migrants and a high-tech computer firm handling sensitive government information—information that could jeopardize the lives of thousands if it got into the wrong hands. Hands like the gang assassin who killed Parker’s partner, who surfaces drawing them together for a final showdown. Parker promised his partner revenge as he bled out in Parker’s arms—revenge is a dish best served cold.

Ｔｈａｎｋｙｏｕ，Ｊａｍｅｓ！

Award-winning author 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐋'𝐄𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞 joined me again to talk about the fifth engrossing installment in his acclaimed Detective Nathan Parker Series, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬. It's another "ripped from the headlines" story in which the life of Miguel, Nathan's foster son, is at stake. Nathan experiences heart-wrenchingly believable moments of sheer terror, nearly uncontrollable anger, frustration, panic, & desperation.

We discussed the initial inspiration for the series which deals with contemporary issues. 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬, in particular, could not be more timely.

This is a great time to get caught up on the series because the still-untitled sixth installment will be available next summer & will again focus on Billie Carson, a beloved & entertaining integral character in the series.

We also had an illuminating discussion about the 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 of being an author today.

I had a wonderful time chatting with award-winning author 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐋'𝐄𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞 recently & am happy to announce that he has agreed to be my second "repeat offender."

We're going to chat again, this time focusing on the fifth and 𝘧𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴 installment in his acclaimed Detective Nathan Parker Series, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬.

He holds a perfect record -- every book in the series has earned 5 stars from me. 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 is even more emotionally resonant, compelling, & fraught with tension than the previous volumes. Earlier in the series, Parker encountered Miguel, a young boy on the run from the Mexican cartel that murdered his family. Miguel became Parker's foster son. The story has advanced a few years & Parker has truly become Miguel’s 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 in every meaningful way. In this latest volume, Miguel's bright future & very life are at stake, making Parker empathetic & relatable at a deeper level. Parker is anticipating the birth of his biological child, as well, & experiences heart-wrenchingly believable moments of sheer terror, nearly uncontrollable anger, frustration, panic, & desperation.

𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 is a tense, un-put-down-able tale & readers will find themselves completely invested in the outcome.

I'll talk with James about his inspiration for the book & 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦!

Let's Ask the Author 🎤

I asked @AuthorJamesLetoile if he’s ever surprised by his characters’ behavior. Here’s his reply:

❝I love writing a series because I really get to know the characters over time. Take Billie Carson for example. We first meet Billie in Dead Drop and she’s a tough one. She’s had to be, living on her own scrapping for recyclable goods to sell. Running from Witness Protection, she lives off the grid. Isolated and alone, but she has a big heart.

She’s changed over the course of the series. She runs a non-profit to help migrants after they arrive in the Phoenix area. We also find out she has a son. In Darkness Falls, Billie’s maternal side comes into play when her son falls in with the wrong people–with potentially deadly consequences. We see elements in Billie’s relationships with her son and Nathan Parker that surprised me as I wrote Darkness Falls. I wouldn't have expected her sentimental side, or a mother’s anxiety over the choices her son makes. Surprises are good…

Even though I plot out the stories, Billie’s experience over five novels changes the voice I hear in my head when I’m writing her scenes and dialogue. She’s more than the loner we met in that first book. Billie is a part of something bigger than herself and she’s become vulnerable, opening up to others. That vulnerability makes her a target for betrayal from someone close to her. When it comes from someone unexpected, it cuts especially deep.❞

after 5 months of racking up demerits on jim’s secret sign-in sheet, i finally made it back to the local Writers Coffeehouse ran by the Awesome, the Amazing, the One and Only— @authorjamesletoile. thankfully i was able to get back in the green by bribing the group with cookies and cupcakes. sage advice for the ages: when in doubt, cookies and cupcakes are always the way…. just you wait, CookieGate 2027 is going to be glorious.

if you’re an author local to the Sacramento area, come swing by! this is by far the best community space for writers in the area. attendance ranges from ~15-30 people. there is no critiquing— we talk shop, socialize, and commiserate over the writer’s life. as you can see from this little cookie-cutter segment, everyone’s Very Friendly and new faces are always welcome, no matter where you are on your publishing journey. come on in, the water's fine~

thank you @edhlibrary for adopting us after the loss of Face in a Book. Our new home is very cozy. for locals interested in attending a panel on character creation, the writing process, agents, and publishers— come to the Author Showcase at the EDH library on September 29 at 5:15-6:45PM.

i’ll see you there :)

P.S. Jim has a new book coming out, Darkness Falls (A Nathan Parker Detective Novel). Come out and support him on October 18, 2pm at @oldhauntsbookshop.
