I wrote my poem on “The Black Church” not only as a reflection on the relevance and importance of healing and restoring the community aspects of the Black church, but also as a tribute to my grandfather and great-grandfather, who were quartet singers and deacons at my childhood church. Their names are listed on my church’s cornerstone, and when I wrote this piece, I felt a very strong connection to my family’s lineage in a way I had not before. Incorporating traditional gospel hymns was a way that I not only came together with the words, but it was also a way I remember the history and the identity of my family, and that my roots and passion for the arts are not something newly discovered to me, but something that has always been a part of my family‘s legacy. 💫This journey has been one of healing, growing, evolving, and rediscovering the joy of my voice. 💫

When I began writing Odes to Black Women, I didn’t know I was creating a triple project—a poetry collection, a healing journal, and an affirmation coloring book. I just knew I had something in my spirit that needed to be said. Something for us. For the Black women who carry the weight of the world while still managing to shine. For the sisters who are tired, who are hopeful, who are learning to rest and reclaim.

Each book was born from the moments I felt unseen, unheard, yet still chose love. It’s my offering—my love letter—to every Black woman who is in the process of becoming: healing old wounds, growing into wholeness, evolving past pain, and finding joy not just in survival, but in thriving.

Thank you to every single person who has supported this vision. Thank you to every woman who sees herself in these pages. I wrote this for you, and I celebrate this moment with all of us.

Today my son turned 12! Lee3 is the absolute joy of my world, and I am so blessed to have such a wonderful child. He has such a big heart and loves his family, friends, and community so much…honey, he can’t wait to see cousins and aunties and uncles…he lights up every time. 😂

He also truly has a heart for God. This year alone he began ushering at a second church, started doing announcement at our church and asked for a an adult bible. And to be honest- knowing Lee3 know God is the greatest thing for me. He is also a basketball player now, going to practice and everything. 😩 and academically, he counties to excel. He is really growing up…🥹

I thank God for the blessing he is and I pray that God will continue to lead his on this journey. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Lee3! by @authorjamiemayes

We make a lot of jokes as teachers about counting down the days until the next holiday break, but truthfully, I know there are so many incredible educators who are simply feeling the weight of the work.

The demands of teaching extend far beyond lesson plans, grading, and classroom management. Educators are constantly navigating the emotional, mental, and professional pressures that come with showing up for others, often while trying to manage the challenges of their own lives.

And sometimes, even the most passionate educators need a little space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.

That’s one of the reasons my Educator Wellness Journal remains one of my proudest book projects in recent years. ❤️

I created this journal with my forever colleagues in mind. It was intentionally designed to help educators process the emotions and experiences that accompany life inside AND outside the classroom.

Through daily emotional check-ins, reflective writing prompts, and social-emotional learning (SEL)-based activities, this journal encourages educators to explore their feelings, acknowledge their challenges, celebrate their growth, and prioritize their personal well-being.

My mission is simple: to create a safe, intentional space for the people who spend so much of their lives creating safe spaces for others.

Because educator wellness shouldn’t be something we only think about when we’re overwhelmed, exhausted, or counting down the days until our next break.

It should be something we nurture every single day.

My Educator Wellness Journal is available now, and my hope is that it reminds educators to spend a little less time simply surviving until the next break and a little more time sitting with their emotions, extending themselves grace, embracing their humanity, and remembering all the beautiful things that make them the incredible educators they are.

You deserve to experience joy, peace, and fulfillment during the school year, too. Not just when the calendar says you’re off. ❤️
