I adored Mary Coleman's shortlisted story BEATRICE IS MALFUNCTIONING. "Beatrice routinely replays their break up scenes, seeing them as clearly as the home videos. Amanda O'Callaghan's @amandaocwriter excellent story was a team favourite in this year's @frazzledlitmag competition. Donal Ryan said: “This is a beautifully observed and very skilfully written story. The inciting trauma is alluded to briefly, subtly and incredibly powerfully. E.L. Faull's story, 45 PROVIDENCE SQUARE, leapt from the @frazzledlitmag submissions queue and into my heart. Here there is innocence, corruption, awakening sexuality, beautifully woven into a marvellous narrative. Laura Carroll gave us a masterpiece for the Frazzled Lit @frazzledlitmag Short Story Award 2026, with her winning story THE SHOE FACTORY. Donal Ryan, our competition judge said: “This is as perfect an explication as I’ve ever encountered of a human processing through unbearable pain. The narrator, as aware and immersed as they are in the minutiae of their surroundings, the tiny textures of the quotidian, is disconnected from the world. Their anhedonia extends from a malfunctioning coffee machine, to the victims of an accidental fire, to their own monstrous uncontroverted grief." Our readers are loving BIKER JESUS by Barbara Byar @barbarabyar, the 2nd place winner of the Frazzled Lit @frazzledlitmag Short Story Award 2026, and now appearing in Issue 5. Donal Ryan, our competition judge, said: "The child at the story’s heart is in mortal danger. She woke in me as she struggled in the water and through her fever the same level of desperate worry as the child in Emma Donoghue’s Room as he smuggled himself, rolled in carpet, from captivity.
