This was one of the most amazing nights of Aurora Borealis I've ever
experienced. I drove around from about 11 p.m. til about 4 a.m. trying to
chase the elusive lady in the sky, battling clouds the entire time. I think
the clouds help make this photo. While I couldn't see the Aurora with the
naked eye (too many lights while driving and too much texting haha), when I
saw the train, I knew it was in the right direction for a killer shot. This
is a single image, no photoshopping and no filters. This was shot at o'dark
thirty on Saturday, March 20. #aurora #auroraborealis #nightsky

Bioluminescent algae is one of my favorite things in the world. If you've ever wondered how you can see those amazing, glowing blue waves, you will have a chance to be guided by four photographers who are passionate about bioluminescent algae and other night photography this coming July. Check out this very affordable seminar on the Olympic Peninsula - my favorite place to photograph Mother Nature's magical glowing waves. I'll be there!

Last night was an adventure. At the first crack of thunder, I was grabbing cameras and heading out the door, hoping I could beat the rain. I drove to Pingston Creek Rd, dodging tumbleweeds and rushing to put up my windows each time Mother Nature sent clouds of dust sideways across the road. Ruts in the road filled with standing water, spraying up on my windshield and loudly filling my wheel wells. By the time I got up high, the rain was coming down sideways, and I wasn't going to drench my camera. Then the epiphany... I could possibly reshoot the photo I got last year over the Columbia that didn't have perfect focus. Granted, the fires burning in the East added a red glow to the sky that wouldn't be in this photo, but I couldn't pass up this chance. The race to beat the storm to my northern spot was now on.
Driving the speed limit wasn't even an option. Between standing water, rain ruining visibility, and debris in the road, slow going was the only option. Branches were already down.
Finally I made it, setting up my camera and holding a little makeshift umbrella over it. Eventually I got soaked, but it was so worth it.
After going through my photos and feeling redeemed from last year's failure, I headed home.
Nope, Mother Nature said, fully blocking the road with a tall ponderosa pine. So much for a 30-minute drive home. Now it was going to be about 2 hours going the long way around. 5 more trees were down on this one road, and the 6th was blocking the whole road. I was able to move it enough so I could squeak by on the shoulder, hoping I wouldn't end up trapped further down the road on Kamloops Island.
Finally, I made it to the bridge and crossed the Columbia River into a Northport that was pitch black without power.
Heading south, DNR and Avista crews were already working along highway 25, and I decided to stay on the state highway instead of taking the short cut.
It was a long night of adventure which reminded me of the shenanigans my dear friend Pete Leslie and I used to get into many years ago. Rest in peace, my friend 💕

He might not have reacted at first because the store was so dang busy. But at least it worked out.

$This is one of my favorite graduation photos that I've ever shot for someone. Unfortunately, it comes with a sad story. On June 25, 2026, I got a message from Yogi that his scooter had been stolen. This broke my heart. He went everywhere and anywhere on that scooter, and it made getting to jobs so much easier for him. The theft was reported to the police and, ironically, someone posted his scooter on Facebook for sale at a fraction of the original purchase cost. We tried to purchase it back, but the person took down the ad and closed their FB account. Four days later, the same thieves were involved in a shootout a couple of blocks from Yogi's home. He could hear the shots from his place. Police swarmed the area, and three young men were arrested "on suspicion of first-degree robbery and drive-by shooting for the June 29 gunfire near North Calispel Street and West Lacrosse Avenue," according to a Spokesman-Review article. Unfortunately, Yogi's scooter was not recovered. I wanted to give enough time for the police to find Yogi's scooter, but obviously they have their hands full. The scooter is most likely gone forever, but we can all help Yogi get his life back by raising enough money for him to get a new one. I'd really appreciate your donation, no matter how small, to help Yogi get his freedom back. Seems the bus is always late when he has a job interview, so it's not just about getting places. It's getting there on time and being in control of his life. Yogi would give people the shirt off his back. He does so much work for the film community, helping, mentoring, and more. He's done tons of pro bono work for local youth hockey leagues. He spends more time volunteering than he does making a living and supporting himself. This is a man with a good heart. With this GoFundMe, I'm only asking for enough to cover the cost of replacing his scooter. I know it would mean a lot to him. Thank you for your consideration and generosity! https://www.gofundme.com/f/yogis-scooter-was-stolen-and-he-needs-a-new-one/cl/o?utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_content=amp30-treatment-6&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link&lang=en_US&attribution_id=sl%3Ae7a4a5cc-012a-443a-a425 by @authorksbrooks$

Haunting image of the Modrite Fire burning in Inchelium, Washington. This is just a small segment of about 23 miles of shoreline burning along the Columbia River. At this point, the fire has burned 19,475 acres. The fire is reported at 63 percent contained, but those fire lines could be jumped with the wind that is expected this weekend.
The evacuation center in the heart of Inchelium has been evacuated to the Kettle Falls Middle School. Please keep the people of Inchelium in your thoughts. #wildfire #modrite #Inchelium #forestfire by @authorksbrooks

A rare moment in front of the camera instead of behind it.

Earning my degree in Digital Filmmaking is a milestone, but it's far from the final frame.

When people watch a film, they remember moments.

A glance. A silence. A decision. A shot that lingers a little longer than expected.

What they don't see is everything that goes into creating those moments.

I wrote a new blog post about the process of making an audience feel something and how every department contributes to that goal. It's a reflection on what I've learned through making films and why I keep coming back to this craft.

Part 1: The Helpers

After wrapping the music video shoot for Nothing Shameful, we kept the energy going with a clown photo shoot.

This first release is for the three helpers who helped bring the night together: Ocean, Kate, and Haley. Sometimes the best images happen after the planned work is done, when everyone is still in the space, still in the mood, and the camera is still ready. by @authorksbrooks
