The New Yorker’s Briefly Noted featured EVERY VALLEY by Charles King!
“This history casts Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ which King calls the ‘greatest piece of participatory art ever created,’ as both quintessentially of its time and an oddity; when it premièred, in 1742, its blend of secular and sacred was unprecedented. Delving into the era’s political and social turmoil, King argues that the primary theme of Enlightenment art wasn’t the triumph of reason but, rather, ‘how to manage catastrophe.’ That theme is evident in King’s astute reading of the libretto (a collection of Bible verses that move from despair to hope), but he also locates it in the lives of key figures who had a hand in shaping and popularizing ‘Messiah!’ The result amounts to more than an account of a piece of music. It is also, as King writes of Handel’s composition, ‘a record of a way of thinking.’” by @authorsync

THREE SUMMERS by Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, with Laura L. Sullivan, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly!
“Collaborators Sabic-El-Rayess and Sullivan (The Cat I Never Named) tackle universal topics surrounding first crushes and bullying while also keenly depicting simmering ethnic tensions within communist Bosnia that would lead to war and genocide in this sensitively crafted and thought-provoking memoir [....] This searching, introspective work-a timely tale of resilience-presciently observes that ‘words, ideas, hate can kill people.” by @authorsync

5/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You know him as Jim, the sidekick in “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” He’s an enslaved Black man who finds himself fleeing down the Mississippi River with Huck, as both attempt to reach very different types of freedom. Along the way, Jim is teased, duped, subjugated and otherwise maligned, in part because of Huck’s penchant for trickery and in part because of the mechanisms of slavery and racism in the American South in the 1800s.

Though Jim’s plight is harrowing, he’s not the star of this Mark Twain classic; he’s relegated to a variety of supporting roles, including comic relief, deus ex machina and agent for Huck’s moral awakening.

Now allow the novelist Percival Everett to reintroduce him. In Everett’s latest book, “James,” Jim becomes, you guessed it, James. The broad strokes of Twain’s character are still there — James is still an enslaved man who runs away after he hears that his master is going to sell him. But in Everett’s hands, James is no longer a helpless companion. Now, he’s a remarkably smart linguist, reader, writer and philosopher who is forced to play dumb for survival but is actually fighting for his family, freedom, dignity, self-determination and the right to tell his own story.

For this month’s Book Review Podcast book club, we’re chatting about “James,” by Percival Everett. The discussion will air on May 31, and we’d love for you to join the conversation. Share your thoughts about the novel in the comment section of this article by May 22, and we may mention your observations in the episode. by @authorsync

BOOK:- THE HOUSEMAID

This was fantastic. I didn’t even try to guess what was really going on because it totally absorbed me. The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is superb. A woman is released from prison and gets a job as a maid for a wealthy couple. But soon, the wife seems to act crazy. We think the new maid is there to get revenge, but something else seems to be going on. Then the maid has an affair with the husband, but still, nothing appears as real. The back and forth POV is handled perfectly, and I am so excited to read book two. I have no idea if it’s the same characters or the same situation, but I’m totally down for it. I can’t even write a normal review here. Highly recommended. by @authorsync

BOOK:- THE QUARRY GIRLS

Part coming of age, part whack-you-in-the-throat thriller, this gripping, pacey story is unique and wonderfully twisty, leaning into our worst childhood fears and telling a tale of secrets as dark as the tunnels the characters explores. Urgent, unsettling, and sharp as a knife, The Quarry Girls is about a small town filled with big secrets, about betrayal, and about a buried-truth that’s about to come to light.

Narrated by the intensely likeable Heather Cash, a young drummer who, with her bandmates, navigates the treacherous waters of impending womanhood one deadly summer. The prose is haunting and elegant, the story beautifully told. This one absolutely shines! by @authorsync

BOOK:- WHEN BREATHE BECOMES AIR
.
The first half of the story is not what I had expected at all. Dr. Kalanithi starts from his childhood, little briefing about the family background and the turning points which directed him towards becoming a doctor, followed by the years in medical school. But what he focuses on most during the first half of the book is, the difficulties faced by a Resident, prior to graduation. The exhausting journey a Resident has to make is explained in a very captivating manner, allowing the reader to empathize with all medical professionals. This part of the book has been an eye-opener for me, for, never had I imagined it to be this much demanding. But it’s not only that. He also goes on to describing moral/ ethical dilemmas one had to face, and the different ways each person deals with critical situations.

“At those critical junctures, the question is not simply whether to live or die but what kind of life is worth living.”

With the starting of second half, Dr. Kalanithi moves on to challenges he had to encounter after his diagnosis. The personal experiences are sometime quite overwhelming, navigating through an alternating curve where we continuously switch between hope and despair. Even with knowing the ending, it’s difficult not to become hopeful that everything might get better and then stay that way. In my opinion, this latter half of the book is therapeutic for any reader, because, if one had already experienced a similar situation, they’ll be able to relate and ease their pain at least a little, while others will understand the anguish and pain suffered by the patients and their families. The way you view people - not just the terminal patients, but any hardships faced by fellow human beings - will change profoundly. by @authorsync

BOOK:- THE SEVEN YEAR SLIP

This book was truly enchanting. I adored every aspect of it—the characters, the plot, the storyline—all of it was exceptionally well-crafted. It had such a profound impact on me that I found myself unable to concentrate on anything else; it was as though the book had taken root in my mind, legit compelling me to set aside my work and immerse myself in its beauty.

I haven’t read anything by Ashley poston and im quite surprised that i enjoyed this book soo much. I will def give her other books a try. This book’s exquisite narrative, skillfully interwoven between two distinct timelines and love stories, held me captivated from start to finish. The poetic prose drew me in, making it impossible to set the book aside. I wholeheartedly recommend this enchanting rom-com that beautifully explores the convergence of past and present, a truly magical read for everyone. by @authorsync

BOOK:- THERE THERE

Tommy Orange’s debut novel is already getting a lot of love, but I have to chime in with my praise, too. For one thing, There, There is set in Oakland, where I lived for most of the 90s, and reading it brought back a lot of memories. The author hits us with a buckshot blast of wonderful characters, self-described “Urban Indians,” each with his/her own short, interwoven chapters. We follow their interconnected lives as they prepare for the first Big Oakland Pow Wow. They are drawn there for many different reasons — to reconnect, to make money, to dance, to record stories. Unfortunately, a few of them are planning to rob the Pow Wow. Orange provides deft, beautifully crafted portraits of their lives, so by the time the hold-up come and (SPOILER) the heist does not go as planned, we care about how all of them will fare. The ending is perfect — unfinished, jagged with emotion, and yet still full of perseverance and hope. I won’t say this read was ‘easy.’ It packs an emotional wallop. But the pages fly by, thanks to the short chapters and varying points of view. by @authorsync

BOOK:- THE LAST LOVE NOTE

Sometimes you just need a book that will make you feel the full range of human emotions. THE LAST LOVE NOTE delivers laughs amidst the tears and a heaping side of hope.

This debut by Emma Grey follows Kate Whittaker, a young mother who finds herself in the uncharted waters of grief after losing her husband. This story is vulnerable, heartfelt and so clearly evident that Emma writes from a place of personal experience with deep loss.

Reading THE LAST LOVE NOTE felt like an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman fighting to redefine her future after her best-laid plans had been stripped away. You will fall in love with the coastal Australian setting, the way Kate navigates conflicting yet coexisting emotions, and how she learns to reimagine big dreams that weren’t entirely lost after all.

This is so much more than a love story, but the best 5 star reads always are. by @authorsync

BOOK:- FIRST LIES WIN

It’s not rare for me to like or even love a good thriller, but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve been this excited about one! Ashley Elston’s first foray out of YA and into the adult market with First Lie Wins shows that she knows how to please an audience, no matter their age!

Evie Porter is enjoying life, having just moved into her boyfriend Ryan’s home in a well-to-do neighborhood. She’s getting to know his tight-knit group of friends and they’re slowly warming up to her. All is going well, until an event that shakes her normally calm, cool and collected exterior and reminds her once again that whatever this life is that she’s living? It isn’t real.

How can it be when SHE doesn’t exist? “Evie Porter” does unique jobs for a man she’s never seen named Mr. Smith, and that’s simply the newest alias he’s given her. Little does her boyfriend know that he’s the new target. Unfortunately, this time she and the mysterious Mr. Smith may be at odds about their ultimate goals, and her life is about to get REALLY crazy! by @authorsync

BOOK:- THE TRUTH ABOUT ACCIDENT

Max Abbott, the youngest of the Abbott family and a single dad, finally gets his book and a wonderful HEA, too. The end has arrived (at least for now) of this favorite series that introduced readers to the amazing Abbott/Coleman/Stillman families — and Fred the Moose, of course! I hate saying good-bye to Butler, Vermont and these beloved characters — but the joys of reading each delightful book will always remain in my memories. I absolutely loved this series.

Along with Max’s featured storyline, readers won’t be disappointed to find a full update included on all the unforgettable cast of characters introduced from the beginning and surprises with the new arrivals as well. You can bet your bottom dollar that Linc and Elmer are still playing matchmakers — but they might find that they’ve been one-upped.

Marie Force doesn’t disappoint as she gives this extraordinary family a marvelous send-off with a momentous and joyful Epilogue. Now I can only hope that on down the road she’ll take us back to Butler for a visit or two with a surprise novella or a holiday book treat. by @authorsync
