I saw an Insta account recently asking “Which is the best touring car?” ⁣
⁣
Predictably most of the answers were “GT3”. I’ve always found the idea of touring in buckets a bit odd, I’ve also found I quite like plenty of room for luggage and not having to treat available space like a game of precision Tetris… ⁣
⁣
For me, the C7.5 RS6 Performance has to be one of the best touring cars. It’s incredibly comfortable, quick (and fast) when needed, has plenty of luggage space and chews up the road with such ease that I have often found myself feeling fresh, even after driving a few hundred miles. ⁣
⁣
The most important thing about a tourer though is that it gets you where you want to go and the RS6’s (Torsen quattro) will do that whatever the weather. Also sounds and looks pretty decent doing it - whilst carrying just about anything I will ever need, with room for souvenirs. ⁣

The 953, quite possibly my all time favourite 911. ⁣
⁣
Porsche entered three in the 1984 Paris-Dakar and got an overall win in the car division with this very vehicle, driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne. A truly outstanding result and a testament to how versatile the 911 formula could be - as well as a reminder of how handy a rear engine can be on sand. ⁣
⁣
It’s a shame that it gets somewhat overshadowed by its more glamorous 959 offspring, which were entered the following year and produced even more success. ⁣
⁣
Of course I love the 959, which Porsche person doesn’t, but the 953 will always be special to me and was very much part of my interest in the 992 Dakar, even though I admit I don’t plan on taking it to Mauritania anytime soon…⁣

Not too many cars cover the miles with such pace and ease, plus get you to your destination with everything you could possibly need, and room to spare. ⁣

I’ve heard people say that if someone drives an RS6 they’ve likely got something even sportier in the garage, but it’s fair to say, if you had to have a one car solution Audi pretty much ticked every box with the C7.5 RS6 Performance. ⁣

A brace of Audi’s greatest: the RS2 and B5 RS4. ⁣
⁣
I can’t help but go dewy-eyed seeing an RS2, particularly one in Nogaro Blue. The collaboration of Porsche and Audi birthed something truly special. Wanted to get some snaps of those gorgeous blue-inlay Recaros too, but the window reflections scuppered that. ⁣
⁣
Clearly the Nuvolari drew most attention, but the number of people studying the RS2 (and RS4) was notable, much more than were interested in the new RS5 lurking in the background. ⁣
⁣
Putting out part of the Audi heritage fleet is a double-edged sword: it shows the incredible pedigree and lineage, but it also reminds that modernisation is not always progress, not least IMHO in the context of the RS5 (of which the first generation was one of Audi’s best looking cars and of course had that sonorous 4.2)…⁣

The Audi Nuvolari, first time seeing it in person. ⁣
⁣
I wasn’t convinced by the pictures I saw online and though it’s better in the flesh, I’m still not sure. I took a friend to the FOS yesterday who’s an even bigger Audi fan than me and he was less impressed… Perhaps it’s something that will grow on us and they will iron out some of the less attractive elements of this working prototype? Maybe some of the more desirable aspects will trickle down to the rest of the range?⁣

Last pics are of the new RS5 (really the new RS4). It’s the third one I’ve seen in person and I’m not convinced by it either. My friend described the carbon as “fish flake” effect and I think that might be the best description yet. We both liked the wheels though, but not the grille (or various other parts, which have been discussed at length elsewhere). ⁣

75 years of Porsche GB, classic Alpine, how much carbon fibre is too much? I think this Pagani might’ve demonstrated (to me, at least), novel way to display a car? Upside down, clearly. Also an example of built for purpose: a rear engine plus sand tyres: ultimate dune weapon. ⁣
