NJIT student Giovanni Crocco (@crocco3d) used Autodesk Flow Studio and Maya to bring his animated short Buster Boone to life. What started as a class assignment went on to become a standout portfolio project that has gained recognition at his school and local film festivals.

#AutodeskAd I’m super excited to bring you this next part of working with Autodesk Flow Studio! As a student I feel like this so important to remember you don’t get everything right on the first try and you can see throughout this process my team and I testing a ton of different ideas of motion capture.

I can say this has certainly been the most fun I have had with animation and bringing characters from the personalities we drew them with to the 3D space :))

Flow studio is free for eligible university students 18+ ! So if you want to give it a try the link is in my bio to try it for yourself ;)

I partnered with Autodesk to level up my reference footage for my animations!

Reference footage is a great tool for animators, but for shots with crazy movements it can involve a lot of guesswork. To help alleviate this, Flow Studio can extract motion capture data from footage shot on my phone to be able to see this action from all angles. I can also apply my character model and preview the motion before I set any keyframes. From there I can either clean it up or build off of it to make it my own!

After using Autodesk Flow Studio to turn video reference into editable 3D motion, I brought the animation into Maya and pushed the key poses. But I still needed to refine the transitions between them.

By creating and pushing breakdown poses with clear leading and following body parts, I can make the animation feel less like raw mocap and more stylised.

Flow Studio gave me a strong starting point, but the animation principles and creative decisions are what helped bring it to life.

I used Autodesk Flow Studio to create editable 3D motion from my reference, then brought it into Maya and used animation layers and keyframing to simplify the mocap down to a few key poses.

From there, I could start pushing the poses, adding more stylization and personality, while still using the original motion as a starting point.

#AutodeskPartner - AI motion capture for beginners: here’s how I turned video reference into editable mocap, then used animation layers and keyframing to turn that motion into a more stylised character animation.

I used Autodesk Flow Studio as a starting point, then brought the motion into Maya to simplify the mocap and start pushing the poses.

🏆 Best of Term | Effects - Pyro & Weather (Spring 2026)

“A chaotic day for an unfortunate farmer.”

Gnomon BFA student Kai Uyekawa (@kai__3d) created this piece in our Dynamics 4 course. The piece was his first full attempt at rigid body destruction using Houdini’s RBD tools. Kai shared his goal for the piece:

“I aimed to really push my pyro versatility as well as get the most out of my first try at destruction using RBD. I had a ton of fun with this one, it definitely felt like a level up! Super excited for the next one!”

Congratulations, Kai!
