Your culture makes up so much of who you are. So why is it not embedded into the foundations of education?
That's exactly the question Professor Jacoba Matapo has spent 25 years answering.

This year, she became the world's first Pacific Professor of Pacific Early Childhood Education. A title that has been decades in the making. Built on the shoulders of a group of pioneering Pacific matua who first paved the way for ECE grounded in Indigenous Pacific values, spirituality, language and identity.

Like many Pacific ECE communities, she aspires for every Pacific child across Aotearoa to experience their language, culture and identity as an integral part of the curriculum

AUT is proud to be the only New Zealand university offering a Bachelor of Education in Teaching with a Pacific specialisation. And with Professor Matapo leading the way, we believe Aotearoa has the opportunity to become a global hub for Pacific early childhood education.

🇻🇺Happy Vanuatu Bislama Language Week!!

Celebrating Vanuatu Language Week with AUT students Ashton, Suzanne, and Maeva as they wear and introduce the “Island dress,” a key part of Ni-Vanuatu identity, especially while living away from home.

The green reflects the Vanuatu flag, symbolising the islands’ soil and vegetation, tying into this year’s theme: “Tokbaot klaemet jenis. Hemi tru samting mo yumi mas lukaotem gud laef” – “Talk about climate change. It is real, and we must look after life.”

Happy Kiribati Language Week! Kam na bane ni mauri! 🇰🇮🌊

For this year’s Wikin te Taetae ni Kiribati, a traditional Kiribati dance, te Mwaie ni Kiribati, is showcased by our very own AUT students, Fetai Meerabe and Margret Ratieta. They share how Kiribati traditional dancing is one of the meaningful ways that helps them stay connected to their culture, heritage, and identity.

This ties in beautifully with this year’s theme of Karina te ang, tauraoi nakon te mwioko ao kabura rikiara ni Kiribati, strive diligently to fulfil our responsibilities and uphold our Kiribati identity 🌺

Fa’afetai tele lava to all who joined us for Samoan Language Week at AUT 🇼🇸. We began with a Faigalotu and Ava ceremony, honouring the spiritual and cultural foundations at the heart of Samoa, setting the tone for a full week of trying, teaching, honouring, and celebrating the Gagana Samoa and the rich culture it carries.

Special thanks to the @autssa26_ for leading many of our celebrations across campus.

In the spirit of this year’s theme ‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu’u’, “From the high mountains are the blessings of the village” — may we continue to uplift and carry the Gagana Samoa.

At last month’s seminar, Dr Marco de Jong briefly examined Aotearoa and the Pacific’s position within the contemporary geopolitical context.
