Spain part two! I miss you Ondartziaga :( (ifykyk) Honorable mention: France 🥐 by @ava.apez
Spain!!! 🇪🇸 (July 15-31, 2025) I finally made it to Spain! I have been looking forward to this trip for so long and this summer it actually happened! It’s so crazy because Spain has always been a big part of my life but this summer i actually got to experience it for myself. I’ve grown up speaking spanish and learning about this culture for so long it feels surreal that I actually got to experience it. A lot of people don’t know this, but my grandpa actually grew up in Sunbilla España until he was 17 and moved to the US to herd sheep. I’ve known about my family in Spain for forever but I had never actually met them until this year. I got to see the Basque country for myself and made lifelong connections with my Spain family who I now love so much. One of the most special parts of this trip was meeting my namesake, my great-aunt Marie Ester, who I love so very much and feel so lucky to have gotten the chance to know. While I have always been able to speak about my family history and my last name I feel like I have never actually been able to identify with it until now. This experience means so much to me on so many levels and I really feel like I know so much more about myself and about my loved ones. I cannot express how much I appreciate everyone who helped make this amazing trip happen so I could be there, especially my dad. Even though it may have been a short time I was there, this trip is something i know will be a part of me for the rest of my life. I even got the chance to learn some Basque while i was there even if it’s just a few words. Eskerrik Asko (thank you) to my amazing Apezteguia family!! by @ava.apez
