it is with a heavy heart and watery eyes that i share the passing of my beloved Gammy.

i thought I’d share the backstory of how Gammy got her nickname. growing up, there was nothing i loved more than flying up to Maryland. i loved the seasons, i loved the seafood, but most of all i loved my grandmother. when a young ava would declare her need for entertainment, Gammy would present to me her minimal DVD collection and let me choose a movie. my options were: Baby Mama, The Land Before Time, and The Proposal (i know, interesting options for a 10-year old girl). my top pick was always The Proposal. I’d pile onto her pristine white couch, and eat fried bologna sandwiches or her deliciously soft and crumbly meatballs while i watched (no wonder i was chubby). if you’ve seen it, you may know that Betty White’s character in that goes by Gammy, and that my friends, is how the matriarch got her name.

if life was a popularity contest, Mary Daly would win it every single time. she was always worried about everybody else, always taking the time to make someone feel special, and found new ways to save my dad, sister, and i’s asses every day. without her, i wouldn’t have: a college education, a laundry list of her hilariously shocking quotes, and a reason to get up and make someone proud everyday.

this candid taken by my dad was one of the last moments i got to share with Gammy where she was still lucid. still squeezing my hand, still making me smile, and still in complete and utter control of her destiny. she made the call when it was time to take her final bow.

Gammy, you’re my best friend and no words could ever do justice to explain how much i love you. who am i supposed to talk to at 3am now? you were always there. by @ava.gdaly

happy 18th birthday to my best friend and the love of my life🎂♥️🔞 there is no bigger fan of maya daly than i (except for maybe @seandalytv )

my darling sissy, you are every magical quality and then some… ferociously intelligent, darkly hilarious, beautifully creative, and the tallest drink of water there is. you possess the innate talent to still somehow be my favorite person even when you’re annoying the shit out of me!! how’s that even possible?! being your older (but much shorter) sister has been one of the greatest privileges of my life… i mean seriously, i use you for clout all of the time🙌

so here’s to an infinite amount of sister trips, late night pick-ups that i have to bribe you to do, and clearing your mountain of clothes off my bed when i come home to visit🥂

i absolutely hate new years. first and foremost, I’ve never had a nye that i look back on and remember fondly, usually as a result of either drinking too much or crying too much (I’ll leave the reasons why up to your imagination). honestly, i’d prefer to sleep through it but that desire to wear a skimpy top and take shots in the name of a new calendar year always sneaks up and bites me in the ass.

it’s because of this, however, I’ve had no choice but to mold the holiday into my own bearable version. i use it as a time to reflect, contemplate, and ask myself: “What the f*ck was that?”

in 2025:
i was diagnosed with OCD, lost a family member, fell from grace for a solid six months, and racked up the most exhausting (and rather shocking) romantic rap sheet of all time.

but i also:
had so much of my writing published i lost count, checked off a bucket list item of hiking Acadia National Park, passed my first semester at FSU with flying colors, was told i could graduate early, and learned a helluva lot about what i want & what i deserve out of life.

my point ladies and gentleman, is that we can’t really predict a single second of our lives…and isn’t that half the fun?
so don’t reduce your year to just good or bad.
life is much too complicated for that.
