This Thursday, I had to undergo spinal fusion surgery, one of the most painful surgeries in the world. I’ve been diagnosed with scoliosis since the sixth grade and over the years, I became more and more insecure, embarrassed, and even frustrated with how my body looked. There were multiple nights filled with tears, multiple mornings where I had to switch my outfit just to seem normal, and multiple days where I wished I could just get rid of my scoliosis. These past 6 years have truly changed the way that I look at myself, as my chronic illness started to engulf my life. I thought that there would be no ending to my ongoing suffering and insecurity, until I was told at my July X-ray that I was able to have surgery. I only had one month to prepare myself for a major surgery that would change my entire life. I went through all different types of emotions; from being excited for the surgery, to crying from fear, to even becoming frustrated when I felt like no one could understand my struggles. But through it all, I had such an amazing support system. I not only had family, both close and distant, but I also had all of my best friends. This journey would have never been possible without the people that I love being there to help me at every obstacle. I am truly so thankful for having such an incredible support system throughout the most challenging experience of my life and I don’t know what I would do without them. With that, I also had an amazing group of doctors, nurses, and my surgeon that truly made this possible. With their help throughout the surgery and during my hospital stay, I was able to fly through my physical therapy and meet all of the requirements to be discharged. I couldn’t have thanked the medical team enough for how incredible they were. If I looked back at myself in the sixth grade, she would’ve never even thought that this would be an option. Finally, I can feel comfortable in my own skin and live a full, healthy life, all thanks to everyone that helped me throughout this process. ❤️ #scoliosis #scoliosisstrong #spinalfusion by @ava_wedel08
