Happy last day of Fashion Month!

Spring Summer 2027 felt like fashion remembering how much fun it can be to get dressed.

Across New York, London, Milan and Paris, designers leaned back into sensuality, glamour, excess and personality. Lingerie moved into daylight. Sheer dressing continued its reign as one of the defining trends of the decade. Skirts returned in every imaginable proportion. Sex appeal became louder and more deliberate. Office clothes were corrupted. Opulence stopped apologizing for itself. And the 1980s came back with power shoulders, drama and attitude.

My seven defining trends of SS27:

What tied them together was a rejection of restraint. Fashion is never created on an isolated island, trends repeat and references return, but what matters is what they mean now. For SS27, that meant body, glamour, character and clothes that actually make you feel something.

Dressing up is back, sensuality is not going anywhere, and fashion feels more alive because of it.

The Fashion Canon: The 25 Strongest Collections of the Decade So Far.

25 collections. 25 arguments for why fashion history should remember them.

Over the course of this series, I explored the collections that I believe have defined fashion in the 2020s so far. Some challenged our understanding of clothing, beauty, and identity. Others demonstrated the enduring power of silhouette, craftsmanship, fantasy, and desire.

This was never simply a ranking of the prettiest clothes or the biggest fashion moments. It was an examination of creative vision, cultural significance, and the designers whose work I believe deserves a lasting place in fashion history.

Fashion is both art and clothing. The strongest collections understand the possibilities of both.

The Fashion Canon: The 25 Strongest Collections of the Decade So Far

No. 1: Maison Margiela SS24 Couture

For the strongest collection of the decade, John Galliano transported us into a fantastical Parisian underworld where strangeness became the ultimate expression of beauty.

Through extraordinary corsetry, distorted silhouettes, historical romance and theatrical storytelling, Galliano celebrated those who exist outside conventional ideals of beauty. Every garment, every character and every detail contributed to a singular artistic vision.

In a decade defined by exceptional ready to wear, SS24 Couture reminded us of couture’s extraordinary cultural and artistic importance. The spectacle was unforgettable, but the clothing was just as remarkable.

This may not be Galliano’s strongest collection across his prolific career, but it stands as the strongest fashion achievement of the 2020s so far.

Number 2 in my Fashion Canon the 25 strongest collections of the decade: Yohji Yamamoto SS20 Womenswear + Menswear

For the first time in my Fashion Canon, I am combining two collections into one placement. Not because I couldn’t choose between them, but because I believe they need each other to tell the complete story.

SS20 represents one of the most complete expressions of Yohji Yamamoto’s artistic language. Across both runways, familiar silhouettes were transformed through fabric manipulation, fragmented tailoring, painterly interventions, unexpected color and extraordinary command of proportion. Masculinity and femininity existed in conversation rather than opposition. Black remained foundational, but vivid florals, electric blue, yellow and fragile whites reminded us that Yohji’s genius has never been dependent on one color.

Yohji had already been showing in Paris since 1981. By 2020, he was not discovering his identity as a designer. He was demonstrating what nearly four decades of artistic mastery could produce while still finding room to experiment.

I would be lying if I said my admiration for Yohji since childhood didn’t influence this ranking. Fashion is art, art is subjective, and personal history inevitably shapes how we experience it. But that admiration is also why I recognize the extraordinary achievement of these collections.

Two runways, one artistic philosophy, and a designer who continues to remind us why his name carries such enormous weight in fashion history.

Matthieu Blazy just showed his Chanel SS27 collection today during PFW.

This might be my favorite Chanel collection since Karl Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019. Matthieu Blazy managed to modernize Chanel without rejecting the woman who has always bought it.

The long term Chanel client is still here. The ladies who lunch can buy the tweed suits, elegant dresses and polished tailoring. But the styling completely changes the energy. A tweed skirt suit worn with nothing underneath suddenly feels young, sensual and relevant, while still being something an established client could simply style with a blouse.

That balance runs through the entire collection. Frayed tweed, exposed skin, sheer layers, corsetry, loosened tailoring and gender play proportions disrupt Chanel’s bourgeois codes without making them unrecognizable. Even the fuller tutu shapes feel playful and Carrie Bradshaw coded rather than costume.

Then Anok Yai came out in that sweeping black celestial gown and I gagged on the eleganza. A real runway wow moment.

Blazy’s Chanel woman is still the Chanel woman. She has just expanded. She is the woman who lunches uptown and the younger downtown fashion girl who wants the same jacket styled completely differently.

That is what makes this feel like such a strong collection for Chanel under Matthieu Blazy.

Kiko Kostadinov showed their SS27 collection today during Paris Fashion Week.

This feels like Kiko growing up without becoming safe. The collection is more polished, sophisticated and wearable than some of the house’s more overtly conceptual work, but the experimentation has not disappeared. It has simply moved deeper into the clothes.

Tailoring, office wear, sportswear and familiar wardrobe staples are distorted through proportion, construction and styling. Jackets shift away from the body, waists move, skirts fragment, trousers loosen and ordinary pieces become strange only once you really look at them.

The femininity is restrained rather than overtly sexy, while flashes of waist, sheer layers and narrow silhouettes keep the body present. Color moves from gray, black and red into mint, cobalt, turquoise, purple and pink, gradually loosening the collection as it goes.

What Kiko understands here is that experimentation does not have to make clothing difficult. The wardrobe can remain familiar while the silhouette does the intellectual work.

One of his strongest and most resolved womenswear collections in recent seasons.
