six months around the world through the lens of my flip phone

my TCL flip saw me travel from New Orleans for Mardi Gras to St. Maarten, Anguilla, and Antigua on an unreal sailing trip. it accompanied me as i solo-traveled through Hong Kong & Taiwan. it came along for an unbelievable week in Indonesia (WHERE I WAS ABLE TO SCUBA DIVE AGAIN!!!??!), and finally, it joined me in London for Raindance, where my favorite red carpet photos were the blurry ones taken on my phone.

it feels silly and a little embarrassing to talk about how much better my life has been without a smart phone, but I’ve reached the point now where it’s been so fucking awesome that i just want to tell everyone about it!! since i made the switch in december, I’ve learned to love reading maps, getting lost, asking strangers for directions, not googling the answer to every question that pops into my mind, listening to the same songs over and over again on the radio, and (almost) never turning to my phone out of boredom (not gonna lie tho, i love myself some 2048). I’ve read dozens of books, written hundreds of pages, learned to actually look at street signs, and captured beautifully imperfect photos of some really special moments.

i still work every day on my computer, and occasionally pop on instagram to say hi to friends, but i finally broke what felt like a decade-long attachment to social media and my phone. I was gifted an iPad yesterday, which means I can finally reconnect a bit with the internet and share a peek into all the amazing adventures I’ve gotten to have these past several months. but im a flip phone girl for life now, let me influence you to try it for yourself 🤪

the love of my life, my favorite person in the universe, the one who holds my hand through all the beautiful and challenging moments in life. you are the best husband, the best uncle, the best dog dad, and my best friend. i am so lucky to spend every day with you, seeing the wonders of your brain and your heart. i love you so much!! two years with you has brought more changes than i could have ever imagined. through the cross-country moves, hospital stays, deaths, joys, and laughter, i’m grateful you’re always by my side. i don’t even know how to put together highlights from a trip this special!!! nothing in the world can compare to seeing an unexpected pod of orcas in a part of the pacific where they are so rarely seen this time of year. i am forever grateful to the ocean and to all our trip buddies, guides and crew. this was evan and i’s belated honeymoon trip, and we couldn’t have imagined it any other way.

thank you to @rachelpederson11 for taking these underwater videos AND for introducing us to this magical song, and thank you to @emilypedersonortiz for documenting me swimming with the orcas and rolling down the sand dunes.
