Up on the Roof

I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space

The Drifters "Up On The Roof" (1964)

In my younger days, I used to climb fire escapes and get access to rooftops to get a different vantage point. Strictly speaking some of these photos are not taken on the roof, but you get the idea. All photos were taken in Toronto.

@avardwoolaver has been kind enough to let us use his photo of Bloor and Dufferin in the 1980's as our album cover. His photos of old Toronto are a treasure trove and we were grateful to choose one. They are now part of the TPL archive.

Track: "Wasted Nights" from "So What, What?", out November 6.

Liege, Belgium, 2020

I spent a week in Belgium in 2020, just before the pandemic. It is the land of Rene Magritte and his surrealist influence seems to be everywhere. I've always enjoyed his paintings--playful and witty, always teetering on the brink of absurdity. He challenges our preconceived ideas of reality, and I'm totally down with that.

I was fortunate enough to visit the Magritte Museum in Brussels, and it was a joy to see his work up close. And just so you know, this is not a table.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2026

I grew up in the country, but lived the city for many years (twenty years in Toronto, and six years in Nagoya, Japan.) I grew accustomed to the urban environment and it felt like home. Now, after having lived in the country again for over twenty years, the city is starting to feel like a novel place once more. When I pick up a camera I am immediately drawn to all of the lines and shapes and geometric forms that I don't see when I look out my windows at home. Also, there is a sense of anonymity in the city and a sense of freedom that relaxes me--no one cares that I'm taking photos. by @avardwoolaver
