Blue Devils International - putting the “I” in DCI 🔵

They say when one door closes, another one opens. If you had told me when I graduated high school that I’d do marching band in Europe, I wouldn’t have believed you. And yet, I now find myself incredibly humbled by the opportunities that music continues to place in front of me. To experience drum corps again, to perform on an international stage, and to represent American marching band and the country itself among far more talented musicians than I is an honor for which there are no words to express my gratitude.

As incredible as the experience of travel and pageantry is, as always, the best part is the people. Both the membership of BDI and the cast of the Basel tattoo at large have produced countless cherished friends, far too many to name and even more difficult to say goodbye to. I will always be grateful for the long days (and nights), fond memories, cold cut sandwiches, and incredible people that made this summer so special!!! taken in Kaserne Basel Tattoo by @avas04

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

This weekend we said goodbye to Leo. This was a pretty big piece of the heart, but the beautiful thing about shadows in our lives is that they require light to be cast. Rest easy, friend. 💜🐾 by @avas04

It is difficult to overstate the impact that Carolina Crown has had on my life. The past five years have completely transformed me as a person, shaped me into the man I am today.

I’m so thankful for the incredible people with whom I’ve shared this stage—all of the friends, educators, and mentors I’ve met along the way. Without the support of countless others, I could never have hoped to reach the level I am at today as a performer, leader, friend, you name it.

As I close one chapter and move on to the next, I reflect on my time doing this crazy thing called drum corps and find: fulfillment, gratitude, passion, discipline, community, and above all, the desire to live and lead with love.

As hard as it is to say goodbye, I know it’s really just “see you later.” Thank you Carolina Crown, you will forever be In My Mind. 💜👑

Carolina Crown 2024… 🔥⛓️‍💥🌟

I continue to be in awe of how lucky I am to call this place home, to come back to so many amazing friends and incredible teachers. The love I have for these people knows no limits, and the worth of our achievements is defined only by our willingness to go after it together every single day. I’m so thankful for this group that never gave up, these people who pushed all the way to the end of what has been my most difficult season yet. To serve as a leader among such inspiring peers has been one of the great opportunities of my life.

As hard as it is to say goodbye each year, I once again come away having redefined my sense of self, my work ethic, and my motivation for everything that I do. I love this organization and this activity and am so fortunate to have one more year to experience. Be the frog!
