Teaching music is a process. We all learn at different rates. Years ago, a friend who taught music, asked what was the average length of time students stayed with me ? I had never thought about that. He said his average was 7. After reflecting, I said my average was 6. He said, “Wow, only 6 lessons, that’s 1 less than me?” I said , “No… 6 years.” He exclaimed , “How do you get them to stay so long?” I said, “I don’t try to get them to stay. I prepare them to leave.” The real secret is letting them discover LOVING MUSIC in their own Unique way. Here is Ryan & Felix. They are good friends. Ryan also loves playing piano. I encouraged them to play a song together. Who knows… maybe one day they will make a band together. In the mean time, I’ll continue teaching and encouraging them to play music that’s fun. 😀🥁🎹🎶 #musician #musicduo #drumteacher by @avdrum

Recently, I converted my dad’s 20 year old super 8 video into digital. I was playing with guitarist and long time friend Roger Espinosa. My sons were so young at this moment . (Angelo was 7 years & Gabe’s was 7 months .). Prior to this, I was playing with flamenco guitarist Guillermo Rios. At this moment , I had recently met Gilberto Gonzalez & Tony Ybarra. I hadn’t yet met Benise, Yussi Wenger, Luis Villegas, Jose Garcia, Ben Woods, Incendio, Amilcar Cruz, Roland Grant and many others. Friendship is what life is all about. Take chances with new people and give it your all while enjoying the experiences. We always believe we could do better but don’t judge yourself too harshly. Time evaporates before you know it Focus on preparation while allowing yourself to enjoy the Present . 😄🥁🪘#latinguitar #rumbaflamenca #latinmusic by @avdrum

Today was a very last minute Jazz Jam of the summer for my younger drum students. It is intended to help prepare them for their upcoming school jazz band season. Parents and friends of my students helped create this band. I even had an opportunity to perform with my sons. I used today as an unofficial bday party. Thank you Rhett Nelson- Sax, Ron Eng-Guitar, Mike Falcone-Keys,vocals & Mike Velasquez- bass @mikevelasbass a. You guys were a HAPPENING BAND. NO Rehearsal-Just sight reading charts. #jazzjam #drumteacher #805 #shuffle by @avdrum

I LOVE Jazz Big Band drumming. I recently received a call for a big band rehearsal. I dragged along my son on Percussion and 11th grade @hbishop_drums to sit in. This is a rehearsal band. Each song is only played once. After I played a few tunes, I asked Heath to play. All songs are sight read on the spot. Later that day, The band contacted me to do a gig with them. I was unavailable so I recommended Heath. They hired him. This is the old school way of getting gigs from your teacher. Way to go Heath. PS. My brother Mike on bass. 🙏🏽🥁 @dwdrums @sabiancymbals @prologixpercussion @remopercussion #sightreading #jazzdrums #bigband by @avdrum
