On May 30th, we lost a great man. I learned so much from Cole. He was the most humble man I had ever met. He always did the most for the people he loved and wanted nothing in return. He loved so hard and lived so well, he lived every day to the fullest. He enjoyed what he did and who he was around. He was the best friend, son, and boyfriend anyone could ask for. He was always the hardest worker at anything he did.
Though a long distance relationship is hard, it’s possible because of the love we have for each other. He was going to make the best husband and father and he was so excited. He listened to me and remembered everything I said. Cole was the most thoughtful man to everyone.
Baby, I love you so much more than you know, and no circumstance will ever change that. Everyone I know will love you too and honor you.

Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember the men and women who died in honor of this country. My dad is one of those people who are honored.
On August 31, 2014, my dad, AF Maj. Rick “Tracer” Schafer, lost his life. Almost 10 years ago. While growing up without him has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I wouldn’t change it. That’s weird, right? I had the best dad in the entire world, he taught me to ride a bike, to shoot a gun, and most importantly, to love and how to be loved. He was the most thoughtful, caring, loving, and fun person I’ve ever known. He set the best example of a loving husband and father. He was the biggest blessing in my life. I love and miss you, Daddy.
However, I do get sad sometimes. I don’t think the grieving process ever ends. I graduated and I couldn’t give him a hug. He isn’t able to scare any boys away. I’ve missed out of almost 10 years of my life with my dad. All the milestones an 18 year old girl reaches, I didn’t get to tell my dad about. But I wouldn’t change anything.
I have a peace that surpasses all understanding. I’m not mad at anyone or anything. I don’t know if I would know the Lord if none of this happened. God is still so good. God has still blessed me with the people in my life. I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am without them. I have learned that my joy is not based on my circumstances, it is based in Christ alone (Phil. 4:11).
If you’ve read this far, I want you to know that God is good even when life is not. He gives blessings, He can take them away because it’s His plan, not mine, and He provides. by @ave.schaf.30
