🎶 These nights, I sit at home and wonder 'Did I lose my thunder?' 🎶

Weeks 7 & 8: Took a break for a minute, how is everyone? I'm good, just taking every excuse to sit in the sun. I got tired of planning a fun portrait so here's a phone selfie 😁 I've been cooking some, thinking a lot, and feeling all the time. Started spending a few hours on the weekend picking up trash at the beach because I don't see the ocean enough 🌊

Books were "I'm Glad My Mom Died" ⚱️ by Jeannette McCurdy and "The Names" 🌺 by Florence Knapp. Heavy books but so interesting in their own way. The Names is probably one of my favorites this year so far. Such a beautiful, heartbreaking, intense, and hopeful book on DV and the power of a name. Highly recommend ✌️ by @avenportx

Week 6: Work has been busy but I'm coming up for air. Thrifting, journaling, and comedy shows. Pacing myself more because I want to do a million things but resting is also wonderful.

Still working through my book this week, "The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman ☕🦊 it's a warm hug of a murder mystery with seniors as amateur detectives. Definitely recommend for something light and cozy 📖 by @avenportx

🎶 The sky is falling, baby. Drop that ass 'fore it crash 🎶

Week 5: What's new? Support groups are great. I'm inspired by the courage and openness of the trans community. Those that hate are missing out. We're pretty damn fun ✌️

Book this week was "A Love Story from the End of the World" by Juhea Kim 🌈 🌿 It's a group of short stories that felt like Black Mirror episodes. Exploring themes of the environment, love, technology, and relationships. I had to take time after each story to digest and sit with my feelings. My favorite was "Older Sister" with the vivid imagery of wildfires and the pressures of success.

Week 4: ooooh messing around with a camera 📸

Self portraits have been healing. Connecting with your body through a lens will bring out the feelings you have for yourself. It's been nice to hear the positive feelings more and drown out the negative self talk. Also, Mooch is a visitor for two weeks and he's making sure he gets his close ups 🐈

Book for the week was "Seascraper" by Benjamin Wood 🦐 🐎 🌊 My favorite so far this year. A shorter story set in a coastal town in Northern England with a powerful message for the soul. If you want to treat yourself to hearing the folk song in all its beauty, listen to the audiobook. The author sings it as well as narrates the book. Goosebumps. 🎶

Week 3 📖

Book this week was "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls 🏠 Pretty sure I sparknotes this memoir in high school so I'm paying my younger self back. It was good, nothing thrilling.

Also, does anyone else remember Bunny from Powerpuff Girls? Some days I feel like her, others I feel like Heimlich from A Bugs Life 🐛

Jubensha game at @script_lab_co with Jeff as the best narrator for the story. If murder mystery and DND had a baby. My character was giving Babushka vibes with the scarf but she was a Mexican cartel's daughter 💃🇲🇽 thank you to everyone who joined and made it a memorable experience 🏜️

Book this week was "I Who Have Never Known Men" by Jacqueline Harpman 🕳️🪜 This existential meditation on what makes us human at our core was uncomfortable, and at some points deeply depressing. I liked the book and I very much respected it. That being said, if you like a nice conclusion as much as I do, this one is going to be frustrating 🫠

Also, thank you to Taylor for driving to Carlsbad to the nearest bakery that makes my favorite pie, coconut custard. 💙 And Kevin for this hilarious sweater 🪿 by @avenportx

Yay, 35! 🪩🎉💃

34 crawled so 35 can walk. Inner work is not glamorous. Like running marathons and you've only traveled a few inches. But I've been unlocking doors this past year, and I can see a path. This is going to be a year to remember 🙂💙

What's new? I've been reading a ton and want to take more photos. I install IG once a week for ten minutes and then delete it because I'm cool. The peace has been amazing though. I love my friends and family. I crocheted a bunch, wrote poetry and officiated Taylor and Kevin's wedding 📖

Anyways, I'm reading 52 books this year so even though the world is on fire, I'll post which ones I'm reading every week with a portrait. This past week was Morning Star by Pierce Brown ⚔️ .

Project Avery

I wanted to let everyone know of a project I am currently working on. I have been working on it for my whole life. I have done a lot of self-reflection and discovered I am non-binary/trans-fem.

I call it a project because it's a journey and is comprised of many individual decisions. It's funny in a way because my identity is not a decision. I could decide to continue investing in a persona that I and others have grown to be comfortable with and know well. That decision would not last long. The decision I'm making is to live an authentic life and have my expressions match who I am to the core.

These days I am able to say I love myself for the first time in 34 years, and I am learning to love myself more every day. I will be temporarily/possibly permanently (I may change it tomorrow. Don't you love uncertainty?) going by Avery and they/them pronouns. I'm your sibling, child, Untie, nibling (instead of nephew/niece), etc.

So why now? Well, it's time to walk the walk for my nieces and nephews. I want them to know there will be times when you're too afraid to move, but we have the strength and courage to do scary things. I want them to learn from my mistakes in thinking I would not regret letting others tell me who I am or who I should be. Mostly, I want them to see that you'll never be happier in life than in those moments of being yourself.

Maybe the journey isn't so much about becoming anything. Maybe it's about un-becoming everything that isn't really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place. (I stole that quote from Paulo Coelho, I'm not that poetic.)

Thank you to loved ones who have supported me as I agonized over this. They are my rock, and I love knowing there are people like that in the world. Wishing you all the best.
