- the vines have been working the afternoon
for longer than anyone standing here
has been paying attention
they spill
they thread
they drape themselves over whatever will hold
and then they keep going
as if going were the whole point
and maybe it is
you know this place
even if your feet have never found it
you know the feeling of walking into living green
and remembering your own life
has been moving too fast
to notice what it was becoming
they hang in long curtains
a slow waterfall of leaves
catching on a hook
a ledge
the edge of an old frame
then dropping again
patient
greedy…
everybody has a version of this
the week that got away
the plan that grew sideways
the part of you that keeps reaching
after the first hold slips
that is the vine in you
that is why this hits
why a stranger could stop
and feel understood
by something that never learned their name
look how they take the long way
look how they braid a year
into a single hanging thought
green on green
new growth over old
the past still feeding the next inch
part of it tests a surface
finds it
commits
that small decision…
commit
continue
become more of what you already are
you have done this
in quieter ways
stayed with a thing
when leaving would have been easier
watered what you almost forgot
gave another day to a life
that was not impressive yet
only alive
only trying
the garden keeps that kind of trying
and makes it look like grace
a tangle that learned elegance
a mess that found a shape
by continuing
stay long enough
and the rushing starts to look thin
next to all this
the vines have one job
they grow
they hang
they claim another inch of the world
and they do it again tomorrow
so take that with you
the unfinished life
the sideways progress
the slow courage of another inch
in the garden
everything is still becoming
and you already know
how badly you have wanted
a life like that
one that keeps going
one that finds a hold
one that makes belonging
out of the simple fact
of remaining
of hanging on
long enough
to look like you were always
meant to be here -
