6/21/26-My dad was called home to The Father on Father’s Day.
My dad’s battle began on Father’s Day last year and came to a courageous end, back home in Louisiana, on Father’s Day once more. While we never imagined our trip back home to Louisiana would take this turn I’m so grateful to have been surrounded by my amazing family, to have shared a normal day where my dad had a fitting last dinner of gumbo with all of us, and to finally have peace in the place his life began. When my dad was diagnosed we knew every single day was a blessing, this weekend was a true testament to that.

August 6th we found out my dad had a cancer with a prevalence rate of .0001% to .03%; cardiac angiosacroma. We couldn’t help but laugh a little when he got the news because it was so true to fashion for my dad. He has always been one to defy the odds and make the best out of a bad situation. Only he would end up with a cancer that rare. I watched my dad allow cancer to change him in ways I truly never imagined. He grew so close to our Lord and offered his sufferings to Him every single day. My dad hid his pain from all of us because he never wanted to be a burden. He wanted me to focus on veterinary school and my sister on getting into medical school. Cancer never stopped my father.My dad fought for nearly a year when he was originally given weeks to maybe months . He showed up for me, my sister Alexa, my little brother Knox, and my newborn sister Ariya. He kept a brave face until the very end. Every phone call, all he cared about was how school was going for me or how my day had been. He never wanted me to worry, ask about his treatments, or his pain. My dad managed to take one last family trip to Disney world and host Thanksgiving in his home when he absolutely should have been resting, but that was my dad, family and memories would ALWAYS come first. He mentored me through my first ever neuter and first year of veterinary school. Some of his last words to my sister and I were to stay strong and be there for one another. He asked us to not fear death but celebrate knowing he was one step closer to going Home. My father paved such a clear path for us to follow. by @averymdaigle
