A first look at Season 2 of @startrek STARFLEET ACADEMY! Arguably one of my favourite costumes of season 2. KEATS played by the absolute joy and honorary costume dept. member, @ruaridhald. This costume nearly killed us. Often the hardest turn out the most beautifully.

For whatever reason the print on both Ru’s suit and jacket was a puzzle for most who encountered it. It took several rounds before I was satisfied. Special thank you to @colinwilyb for making the supersuit portion become that of my dreams in the 11th hour and out of all people my sister @emplewes for making the jacket print exactly what I envisioned at 2am while working on another job. by @averyplewes

VIRAJ for @readyornotfilm played by @nadeemtheactor

Early on Nadeem and I had a very collaborative relationship. We both approached the character wanting him to be culturally rich and modern. Nadeem shared a dhoti-suit worn by @boseoninsta and from there we had @calabretta.1971 make the jackets and @lalka.ca made the stunt-ready Dhoti-trousers. Fabric by @hollandandsherryapparel

For the mask I looked to my pal @pkroetsch who replicated Nadeem’s face. @housecat__ our textile artist then guilded it and added highlights and low lights to give depth with how Brett would be lighting this.

@startrek STARFLEET ACADEMY: 106 “Come, Let’s Away”
Written by Kenneth Lin & @kileyrossetter directed by @tengstagram THE FURIES!!

This episode we considered a horror episode… kind of my specialty! With villains I love exploring where the body and skin begins and ends with their costume. Alex and Noga wanted to have a nomadic influence. I looked at trims from all eras and all over and worked with @pkroetsch to knock them into a more futuristic space that also referenced bones and muscle.

Our textile arts team accomplished something beyond my wildest dreams using a shibori tie-dye technique to accomplish a sinewy skin texture that was both gorgeous and creepy. Our Build dept put all of these together in so many pieces. I particularly loved the stomachs. @monbonnnnn assembled pieces of trim bound between layers of leather to look like skin and veins that was parasite like. Our sculpt dept lead by @ananthy worked in overdrive to churn out hundreds of different trims and armour.

Our cutter @wingmancostumes took the lead on this species and turned out some truly exceptional pieces. This ep had a ton of stunts, not only did they have to look otherworldly they also required an above-and-beyond amount of mobility.

FYC Creative Arts Emmys @startrek STARFLEET ACADEMY SEASON 1: Episode 109, 300th Night. For outstanding fantasy/sci-fi costumes.

Genesis played by @bellashepard was described by @team_karim in this costume as a space baddie. The ultimate compliment💫

Darem played by @georgehawkins ended up being one of my fav costumes of the episode but not without some fedex strike heartbreak first. I had ordered a ton of gorgeous pieces for George and Sandro which never showed. I wanted George’s costume to have depth and detail to complement his character.

I ended up having @kaitlynfifi buy several t-shirts in a variety of abstract prints and textures to then harvest panels to make something less pedestrian. I knew that with a neutral baseline of different tones @bon.bons_style could then unify it into something quite beautiful. It’s not everyday that Chenille translates into a sci-fi appropriate T-shirt but that’s what I loved so much about designing Star Trek and the culture of the show. Constantly seeking out beauty in the most unconventional places!

FYC Creative Arts Emmys @startrek STARFLEET ACADEMY SEASON 1: Episode 109, 300th Night. For outstanding fantasy/sci-fi costumes.

Prepping this episode took an unexpected nightmare of a turn when FedEx went on strike. It’s rare to see the cadets in civilian clothes, I was rather heartbroken to learn some of the stuff I had dreamt of wouldn’t arrive in time. That said one of the things I loved about Trek was how relentless and demanding it was. Every two weeks was forced resourcefulness! @lilkerriceb can pull off just about anything- and transform it. For the outer silhouette we started with a @yproject_official jacket from @ssense. The top was a sweatshirt from @freepeople we re cut. Pants were from stock. Leg warmers were arm warmers from @demobaza. Boots @adidasy3 from @ssense. Arm warmers were from an army surplus store we recut. And gloves from stock. Slide 3 you’ll see where we started and how a killer Textile Arts dept can transform garments.

Anisha, having been on the run for years, I designed a functional surveillance camouflage print, which we tested and was capable of tricking AI surveillance technology. One of my favourite parts of designing Star Trek is how much we do practically.

#FYC Starfleet Academy Season 1! Nahla *chancellor casual* costume highlights. A mix of bias-cut, drapey, delicious, silks, leather, linen and tissue thin jersey knits in putty earth tones. Majority of Nahla’s closet was made up of custom built wide leg pants, Rick Owens knits, and custom tops. Holly, Darci, Tanya and I spent so much time together in fittings we developed a non verbal symbiotic shorthand.

Paul Giamatti! A fearless desire to play and openness... to this day he is one of the dreamiest actors I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with. For our finale written by Alex Kurtzman and Kirsten Beyer, directed by @olatundeo I wanted Nus Braka to feel his most dandy. Like a Karl Lagerfeld space pirate!
