Penelope Kate took her first steps in months, into the arms of Jesus Christ yesterday. Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to describe it. The world lost the most amazing, kind, and adventurous 9-year-old. I am blessed beyond measure to have welcomed you and your brothers into my life those short 4 years ago and it’s been a blessing to watch you and your brothers grow up. I wish so badly that we could all have watched you grow up just a little longer. Our hearts are broken but we know you finally got your miracle. And although it isn’t the miracle we on earth were hoping for, we know it’s the miracle of eternity with Jesus in Heaven. I’ll forever cherish our games of hide and seek, side-by-side rides to the creek, and summer swims. You brought so much joy to everyone around you, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of your life. Your impact on so many in such a short time is immeasurable. Thank you Doug and Megan for sharing your sweet baby girl with me. I’m eternally grateful. Rest easy, sweet girl. You’ll always be in my heart. by @averyygrantham

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart TRUSTS in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.” Psalm 28:7

The place where I encountered Him and His faithfulness!! I am forever grateful for the experiences, friendships, and opportunities this beautiful town has given me. In the highs and the lows, He held me and reminded me that the God of the mountain is also the God of the valley.

Today marks one year since PK got to meet Jesus.

It’s hard to put into words what this year has been like. Losing her so young, so suddenly, is a grief I’ll carry forever. You don’t expect to lose a child you watched grow up. You don’t plan for the kind of heartbreak that childhood cancer brings, especially something as cruel as DMG. But through it, I’ve learned so much. About love. About loss. About faith. About how precious every single moment really is. With that being said, I wanted to share some wisdom that God has placed on my heart this past year:

1. God’s hand is always in the story, even in the pain.
2. Love your people loudly and without hesitation.
3. Notice the “God winks” — the little signs that remind you He’s working, even when you can’t see it.
4. Have faith like the Karrenbrocks — grace, strength, and trust unshaken.
5. Never take a single moment for granted.

Coming home will never feel the same. What used to mean visiting PK now means visiting her final resting place, and that will never feel fair. There’s a silence where her voice used to be, a light missing in every room. But I see her in so many small moments: A sunset, a ladybug, a verse, a memory. She’s still here, just in a different way.

This year has changed me. It’s deepened my faith, reminded me to love deeper, and taught me that even when we grieve, we don’t grieve without hope.

I will never stop sharing your story or the testament it is to God’s goodness and faithfulness. Your impact is far beyond anything we can comprehend on this side of eternity, but I rejoice knowing that we are one year closer to being reunited with you and with our Heavenly Father — in a place with no hurt, no pain, and no suffering.

What a blessing it was to love you and to be loved by you Penelope Kate.

Run like the wind, sweet angel.
