In the introduction to his third book, Gazing Homewards: Love and Despair: A World War One True Story, Andy Garner claims, he is not a historian. I disagree. Andy is, as anyone who has read his three books knows, a first-rate historian. Historians after all, mine the past to understand where we have come from to, in a sense, better understand our own history as individuals and nations. Andy does this extremely effectively by eschewing battle maps and after-action reports in favor of the words and thoughts of individuals in the trenches. The letters, written over 100 years ago are touching reminders that wars are fought by men, not machines. Men who leave behind loved ones in the defense of liberty.
Letters to loved ones, written by individuals at war, constitute an important first look at the history of conflict.

After I have finished my next project I have been given the incredible opportunity to write the story of Robert Bamford. He emigrated to Australia from England, as war broke out he joined the AIF and was killed in action shortly thereafter. His uncle wrote his story in the 1970's and I have the chance to update and publish as a request from the great nephew.

On the back of the dog photo...

Last thing Robert Bamford gave to his younger brother as he left appley bridge station for 1st world war & was killed shortly afterwards. It was treasured afterwards.

A very special church, I left feeling very moved.

The church was used by Edith Cavell's family, her father was the reverend for 45 years.

The piece of wood in the glass cabinet although not proved, is believed to be the grave marker for Edith after she was executed in Brussels in 1915 for helping over 200 allied soldiers escape.

Prepping for a new talk - using letters to remember and preserve history.

Sometimes asked what do relatives think about your work: An example of how pro-active they become comes from a relative of George Farmer. I had no photographs of George when I wrote his story, a stroke of luck led me to descendents of his family. They had a collection of photos of George and his wife Gretchen, which were gifted to me to look after as the custodian. Forever grateful.

A must visit church.

St Peter's Church, Theberton

Remembered in glass V.C. winner Lt. Col. C H. M. Doughty, Gallipoli. His face features on the stained glass window.

Parts of Zeppelin L48 that crashed nearby, those killed were originally buried here. Three survived the crash.

Great memorial book in the church, showing the unveiling of the war memorial in July 1921

Charles Montagu Doughty 1843-1926 wrote the book "Travels in Arabia Deserta" it inspired T.E.Lawrence's adventure in Arabia, "Lawrence of Arabia".
