What 12 years of running looks like…

First track season as a freshman in 2013 (where I almost quit) to now road racing, training, and best of all coaching new generations of runners.

Can’t express what this sport and community means to me. From being the worst freshman on the team, to the top 200 Milers in NJ, to getting cut from a D1 team, and now taking it one mile at a time and coaching… it’s been a roller coaster.

Seriously couldn’t do it without the support of friends, family, and other coaches.

But even though I’m no where near what I used to be I love this sport more and more everyday.

Humbling workouts. Running in -10°F to 102°F. Injury. Vomit inducing speed sessions. Runs twice a day. Lifting 2-3x a week. Gotta love it.

The biggest failure of my running career…

Hard to imagine that I’ve been a runner for 10yrs now. Injury and the fear of making it worse had me out from 2019-2020, and resulted in me gaining 35lbs. There was a lot of progress that needed to be made.

Past couple of years I’ve grown to be more consistent and slowly getting to my old pr’s. However, I became increasingly scared of failure.

When the sport you love becomes a stressful job, you become fragile and burnt out. All I wanted was this race to be “over” but stupidly expected to do well.

Physically, training for the past months pointed to at least a 17:30. But mentally, it produced a 18:55.

I’m by no means a great runner, but these concepts are always true. Learning to simply love running, rather than the outcome, will always take me further.

| Sweat, blood and plenty of tears |

It’s hard to comprehend what absolute poverty looks and feels like until you see it yourself. Beautiful people in ugly conditions. Seeing families cry with joy over a 12x12 brick and sheet metal home is all it takes to have you question your own contentment.

The downside of paradise seems to be weakness and ungratefulness. In a society of excess, what do you do? by @aviles_27
