It’s taken me a while to write this @ayaanvira - What an amazing weekend filled with grad events and of course, hockey- your true passion!!!

From an early age, graduating from MCHA and seeing you in your gown and cap brought me to tears wondering where the future would take you.

Ayaan, watching you graduate from high school fills our heart’s with pride, joy, and love beyond words. From your very first steps to this incredible milestone, you’ve shown strength, determination, kindness, perseverance and a heart full of dreams. You’ve worked hard, overcome challenges, and grown into an amazing young man.

As our firstborn, you’ve paved the way with courage and set the bar high. This is just the beginning of the amazing journey ahead. Always stay true to yourself, never stop learning, and remember that no matter how far you go, you’ll always have a home filled with love and support cheering you on.

Welcome to the Mavericks family, Al-Amin!

Introducing your Head Coach for the U18 Mavericks in the 2026/27 season, Al-Amin Vira.

Al-Amin is an experienced hockey coach and sport leader with a lifelong connection to both ice hockey and ball hockey. Having grown up playing both, he brings an understanding of how the two versions of the game can complement one another in athlete development. His connection to high-performance hockey also extends to his family, with one of his children currently playing high-level ice hockey and another having competed at the elite level.

Most recently, Al-Amin led the Calgary Xtreme U19 program to a Gold Medal in 2026, following a Silver Medal in 2025 and Bronze Medal in 2024. His coaching experience also includes female hockey in Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary, where he has helped teams capture multiple gold medals while developing athletes in competitive, positive and inclusive environments. His coaching philosophy emphasizes strong fundamentals, accountability, teamwork and confidence, while creating an environment where athletes enjoy competing and want to improve.

Beyond the bench, Al-Amin has served as a Director with Hockey Alberta, where part of his work focused on growing hockey through inclusion, diversity and creating opportunities for more people to participate in the sport. He brings that experience and leadership to the U18 Mavericks with the same approach that has guided his coaching throughout his career: teach the game, build confidence, create a strong team culture and give athletes an environment in which they can succeed.
