Since summer, I’ve been to our local cathedral a lot, not for religious reasons but because it’s an awesome place and they’re doing an increasingly good job of putting on events, exhibitions, installations and concerts for everyone which I think is great.

A few of my visits have been to nighttime ‘candlelit concerts’ (with fake candles of course though real would’ve been cool). They’re a series, from the same company, with tribute acts to various bands or artists. I didn’t think I was a tribute band person before this, having spent the past 20+ years watching my fave bands live; they, themselves, are part of the experience for me. I went to the first tribute one at the cathedral just out of curiosity, without expectations, knowing I’d enjoy the setting. It’s not the same feeling but it’s reminded me of the value of a low pressure singalong. Not everything has to be taken as ‘seriously’ as my usual gigging. People can just want a nice night close to home.

I do have a point, in case you were wondering how this is relevant to tarot! Last night’s trip was a David Bowie act (still good but not as good as the others), hence this song for this 2 of Cups, given the text on it.

And I like this pair! A steady, enduring love.

But for a dance to be danced well, for it to succeed and last, have perfect timing, harmony and to seem effortless, in fact there has to be continual effort, dedication, pacing, practice, patience. So I love this metronome for the Knight of Pentacles. What a neat idea!

I meant to post last night but I’d had a long day and was exhausted. TLC time today, thankfully on holiday now for several days. Wedging this in while it’s still one day post-event and before I fall asleep again! Catching up on the rest of the internet tomorrow! 😵‍💫

Movement, whether of time, through life or any other kind, is unavoidable. Movement makes change inevitable and by consequence risks a change that we can’t control or may not want. We might fight for it or fight against it. We might try to cheat it but we can’t stay in the same moment forever.

I love this Death card because it shows that even if the change is unfavourable, to say the least, new growth will come in the end. Time heals. We will flourish again.

Since this seems to be a bit of a different deck, an alternative take:

How about toeing the edge with confidence and exquisite sensation?

Know and embrace your carnal self. When you understand it, you can allow it to live and breathe but also harness and tame it. You can lose yourself pleasurably, become bound by your own desire in the knowledge that the ties are of your own design. You can wear the mask when it suits you, then pull it off and step away safely.

This is one of my favourite Devils and I love his iridescent shine on this edition of the Ethereal Visions deck. Really enhances his power I think. 😈

(I have the Luna and the original, which had a few cards I prefer over their Luna counterparts but overall I like the Luna better.)

‘Seven devils all around me…’ - Now that’s a good challenge! I said I wanted to post some Devils this October and that number seems achievable for me (probably!), as quite a sporadic poster and also a lover of Devil cards, so I’ve already been through many faves. 😳😂🤷‍♀️

I know we’re analysing lyrics here instead of tarot cards and maybe ‘seven’ was chosen just for the assonance, which sounds awesome in context, but I also like to think it also relates to the deadly sins too.

Also what a smooth sidestep from more Devil thoughts if I’m going to have to talk about four more Devil cards this month. 😜

This is a very hopeful-looking Moon card. I love her pale beauty against the darkness. The moonlight shows her outline, but we can’t know the details; the colour of her hair, her dress. She’s gazing upward in wonder, searching for guidance, but while captivating, the shining moon and stars and the cool midnight surrounding her, turn her back into her own mind rather than offering true clarity. She sits, carefully pondering which of her thoughts she can trust and which she should mistrust. How to tell between them. Are these insights quiet revelations, emerging from the depths of herself, called forth by the profound solitude? Which ones are merely amplified insecurities and falsehoods? She has no one to ask but herself.

(Also love the inclusion of the fish for Pisces too! 🐟 🐟)

A while back, I mentioned an upcoming installation at our local cathedral: a moon exhibition that’s in our city all through October. I’ve visited it quite a few times, by myself and showing friends and family during the day. I’ve also been at night, when the cathedral is spectacularly lit up, really adding to the feel of it. A couple of my visits were lucky enough to be quiet ones, where I could just sit, think and reflect, like this figure in the Moon card. Might’ve got my little travelling RWS mini tin out too, slightly fearing I was about to be ejected from the building 👀 😳😬 …but I wasn’t. I’m good with cards that mostly fit into my hands. 😉

The colours in these two cards are strikingly sensational and seem to give two apparently dissimilar cards a similar feel.

I’d argue they’re outliers in this deck, not wholly representative of the rest of it, but they’re also worth a post because they’re the pair that made decide to buy it back in the spring.

So what’s similar about Temperance and the Queen of Wands?

I can fall victim to talking about Temperance as simply balance and moderation, which it is, but it’s also alchemical mixing; a perfect, harmonious blend and union. A coming together of everything just in the right proportions. And that creates the conditions for something magical and spellbinding to happen, like the Queen of Wands’ bold, mesmerising and magnificent allure.

The Hermit is confronted by what’s not ‘for’ her. What’s withheld, guarded, closed off, out of reach. She lights a candle to guide her and retreats into the protective veil of herself. The darkness comforts her, soothing her heart and mind. There, she wonders at the stars instead. They offer insight, peace, silent direction and a reminder of what’s truly important.

Apologies for a slightly melancholy-sounding post this evening! There’s actually lots of posts I want to make at the moment but I’m tired and this was the only one I found words for. It’s funny, that. When I have plenty of time to post, nothing comes and when I don’t or have no energy, I’m often full of inspiration! 😂

I meant to say on Tuesday’s posts, I had a fab day with visiting friends yet again. I’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of friends visit this year and have visited in return when I can too. Hoping to plan similar for next year as well. Writing this as a bit of a diary notation - I did see friends on Tuesday - but also as it does have relevance to my post. I’d be saying something more personal than I’d want to if I elaborated too much but I’ve been trying to change my attitude this year, trying to find a new balance around what’s important to me and what’s possible. Some refocusing has been involved. I still slip up and/or have painful reminders to contend with and some adjusting is needed but I think I’m getting it right on the whole.

Just popping on another Devil card before bedtime. I said I wanted to post a few in October and I know it’s only the 5th and I’ve got all month, but I also know me and on any given day the switch might turn off in my head and I won’t post for 2 weeks. 🤷‍♀️🤪

I posted a 7 of Wands / 4 of Swords combo recently and just for fun, threw in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference, as it was a teen fave of mine and has been in phases ever since. Although this deck is nothing to do with the series, this card image makes me think of it. Historic Slayer?

It’s quite intriguing and direct for a 4 of Swords, with the figure at the forefront of the card. It makes me feel she’s standing before someone. She’s come through the turmoil, the fight, anguish and pain, head slightly bowed, sword downturned, helmet off but with armour still on, asking ‘Was that enough? Is it finished now?’ while knowing, really, the peace and respite are temporary. A sad awareness that at some point, she’ll have to return to it. It’s hard to look at that image and feel that she’s fully done.

I’m not great at flower symbology but ‘rebirth and resilience’ seem to be associated with the lotus, amongst other things, and that resonates. Rest now, but rise to go again.

The question is, who is she asking? Who does she serve, in that armour? If it’s herself or a greater good and she accepts that, then that’s fine, but if it’s someone else making the rules, causing the sorrow and hurt of the 3 and the conflict, defeat and win-at-all-costs of the 5…. then maybe she really should just fire her Watcher and tell The Council she’s not working for them anymore. 🤷‍♀️

Oh, right. 😂

I’ve amused myself a bit too much while writing this, but the message still counts. Think about who or what has caused your need for calmness and rest (again). Is the pain worth it?

Also, I’ve waited a long time to use this song. 🧛‍♂️

When desires and manifestation give rise to dark obsession… 👀

Lubanko thoughts:

I was looking through decks to try and thin down my collection. I thought I didn’t like this one much, but it turns out I do (with caveats 😂). I got it back in January, after the mass market version was released in the UK. On reflection, it was the wrong deck at the wrong time. Sometimes I just want lighter, ‘easy’ decks, especially if I’m having a busy or heavy time, and this is… not. 😂

The Devil and a few other cards jumped out at me but otherwise the deck didn’t sit well with me. I put the box away and forgot about it.

Coming back to it now, when I’m in a better mood for a mentally and emotionally challenging deck, I surprised myself with how many cards I picked out as visually great, thought provoking or ‘ooh I could post that’. These two are stunning! I know I barely said one line about them but I didn’t have to say more. It’s a feeling when you look at them, not words. 👿🩷😈

That said, I still don’t feel compelled to actively read from it much but that’s okay. That was never going to be its purpose. I bought it because it was different (for me), and I think you can learn from a deck even if you don’t feel totally comfortable with it. With a lot of decks, I’ll just take cards, enjoy and muse on them, and see new details and meanings, without connecting in the way I do with others. It’s definitely part of why I’m so bad at getting rid of decks. (Common problem round here! 😉)

Looking again, this is a deck of two halves for me; some cards are bold, raw, otherworldly or confrontational, which isn’t a bad thing - these two are without question absolutely mesmerising! - but from which I feel unsettling or dark undertones (these are more extreme examples obviously). They can give me dark readings, even when I love or appreciate the art. I’m just sensitive to it, which is why I know I won’t be able to read from this much. Also, this KoW gives me a Thoth feeling, whose art I find quite esoteric, foreboding and overwhelming as well. It’s a ‘me thing’. I feel drama and anxiety from it rather than intuition. 😳

It’s hard to fully relax when you’ve been caught out or forced to defend yourself in situations you thought were safe, in the past. You can enter a state of hyper vigilance, you sleep with one eye open, your mind anticipates the next fight. You look for it, which makes it worse. You overreact or perpetuate your own anxiety.

Accept that things you can’t control will happen and trust yourself to deal with them when they come. Being unrested won’t help with that.

Also don’t stay up too late on a Sunday night, when you have to work in the morning. It won’t help with that either.

Anyway, proper Buffy Summers moment, isn’t it? All dressed up for a night out, then thrown into mortal combat. Unlucky.

Two things to say: firstly, I would say ‘I really tried’ with the Tempest Tarot, but I suppose I didn’t. It’s just that right from the start, I didn’t feel much from it or really connect and that usually happens straight away for me, if it’s going to. Apart from… this awesome Devil card, which I love. It’s more or less the only reason I still have the deck. I know I should let it go, but… 🫤

Secondly, I made this account 3 years ago and that year I decided I would post a whole load of great Devil cards in October. Might do it again. 😈
