The journey doesn’t begin on graduation day—it begins long before that.I recently had the opportunity to speak with the incredible young women of the Young Women’s Empowerment Academy during their visit to Delaware State University. As they walked the campus and explored what their futures could look like, I was reminded of something I believe deeply:Exposure creates confidence, but preparation creates opportunity.Every tour, every conversation, and every new environment helps young people envision what’s possible. As parents, mentors, educators, and community leaders, our role is to help them prepare for what comes after they see the vision.That’s why this month’s focus is on supporting families of graduates.Whether your graduate is heading to college, entering the workforce, or beginning a new chapter, now is the time to have the conversations and put the plans in place that help protect what comes next.Thank you to the Young Women’s Empowerment Academy for allowing me to be a small part of these young women’s journey. “Growth begins the moment you stop shrinking yourself to fit familiar spaces.”As a young girl, I was always watching and observing — what worked, what didn’t, how people responded, and what different environments revealed.Summer programs, parks, museums, road trips, even simple car rides outside of my normal surroundings all exposed me to something new.Later, in corporate spaces, I remember being the only person who looked like me in certain rooms. I even found out bets were being taken that I wouldn’t pass my Series 7.I passed. Then I obtained my Series 63 too.That season taught me that proximity, cultural exposure, and environment matter.
