It was about six thirty, an autumn morning, the sun was just beginning to find its way over the Palatine Hill, slowly spilling its golden light over the ruins of the Roman Forum. I happened to be walking by when I saw it. Something about that moment made me stop. So I found a spot, got myself a coffee, opened my sketchbook and stayed there for the next few hours or so. A few hundred curious travellers passed by while I sat there, sketching away. I had my sketchbook, an old pen, a few Marlboros, a good coffee and the privilege of spending a morning in the middle of one of the greatest cities in history. Honestly, what more could I have asked for? I’d arrived with quite a lot on my mind, perhaps a little more than I’d like to admit. But sitting there, watching Rome come alive through my sketchbook and occasionally through my camera, I didn’t feel the need to rush anywhere. Didn’t feel the need to figure everything out either. For once, I was quite happy just being there. I don’t know, there’s something about travelling alone, sitting in an unfamiliar city and watching life go by. You start noticing little things. The morning light, strangers passing by, conversations you don’t understand, the sound of the city waking up. And somehow, without really trying, you find yourself enjoying your own company a little more. My sketch didn’t turn out as perfect as I had imagined, but then again, neither have most things in my life. And that’s alright i guess. I think this was where my slow journey through Rome really began. Anyway, that’s all for now. Until I have more to say. So, Mr. Lou was telling me how, about sixty years ago, there were only paddy fields in front of that road, dotted with the occasional little shack. We somehow wandered into a conversation about the Assam-type houses that are slowly disappearing, and laughed at the rather tragic collection of characterless concrete boxes that have taken their place across most of the city. Later, his son Chris, a good friend, played Don’t think twice, it’s alright, one of my favourite songs of all times. And I ended the night without crying, which, lately, feels almost like an achievement. Although, if I’m being honest, I probably did.
