Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. We honour the memory of those lost through a commitment to protecting our spaces and ensure they stay welcoming and safe for everyone.

The queer and trans community are the original pioneers of raving and these spaces were not originally commercialized festivals or overpriced parties, but spaces where people could be safe to be themselves and be in community without fear of violence or harm.

We encourage everyone to speak up against the rise of anti trans rhetoric and policies everywhere.

Also joining us for SWAY November 15 @awarenessteamywg ✨✨

Awareness Team is on a mission to redefine safety at events. Grounded in harm reduction and influenced by BDSM dungeon masters and safety teams at kink events, our mission is to help create spaces that prioritise harm reduction, consent, and community well-being. We go beyond conventional safety measures, offering substance use and sex harm reduction supplies while promoting education on diverse topics. With our discreet on-site presence, our team members provide a friendly face for those in need.
We are your dedicated allies in safety at events, and we aim to ensure every event is a fun, inclusive, and safe environment that celebrates the power of mutual support and respect.“
✨✨✨

They are a part of our community as ravers and DJs as well! Their education, allyship, and presence strengthen any space we’re grateful to have them here with us.

SWAY this way 🖤🌌✨

while we operate primarily within the rave community, we cannot forget our roots! It is a privilege to be able to only need harm reduction services for when you go out on the weekend, to only need clean supplies when you’re partying, to be able to feel safe using substances openly. The queer, Black and Brown pioneers who have come before us needed harm reduction for survival.

When the governments and systems designed to protect us refused to protect all of us, harm reduction became an essential form of community care and advocacy. this is still the reality today amidst the ongoing drug toxicity crisis.

It is important to remember our roots. Raving and electronic music also have their roots in the queer and black communities - as spaces that were never designed to be accepted by the oppressive in power. It is wrong to ignore the history of our communities. Raving has always been a political act - a counterculture which holds space for those marginalized by society. We must center racialzied and queer artists + contributors and ensure raves / EDM spaces remain safe spaces for them.

The work we do will always take the lead from those at the heart of this movement - those experiencing homelessness, sex workers, queer/trans/2S folks, Indigenous, Black and Brown and racialzied communities.

What we do isn’t just about making sure an event is safe or without incident. Our work aims to create a safer world for all bodies and all people - inside or outside the rave. we aim to smash stigma and create a world without judgement - where all human lives are deemed worthy, irrespective of the choices one makes.

Harm reduction is radical and revolutionary love! We are happy to have you along with us in this fight. 🖤🖤

Swipe to learn more about how discrimination impacts how we show up (or don’t) at the rave. this is a serious issue prevalent throughout all communities, not just the EDM scene - but places and groups that aim to promote PLUR should pay extra attention to creating safe spaces and being leaders in gender equity.

PLUR = safe for everyone, everyone is respected, everyone is treated fairly and valued wholly.

A recent study found that over 1 billion young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices! Are you one of them?

Wearing earplugs, taking breaks throughout the night, and if you can, staying away from the speakers - can all help prevent hearing damage and tinnitus. Tinnitus is a condition in which you hear continuous ringing sounds you can’t switch off.

Protecting your ears is a low risk high reward move! Pop in your earplugs and dance the night away!

swipe to learn about being a safe person to say to no!

Consent isn’t just about asking - it’s about respecting the response whether it’s a yes or a no. It’s important to be a safe person to say no to. Pressuring or trying to persuade someone is coercion which is sexual violence.

🌟 Understanding Gender-Based Violence (GBV) 🌟

Gender-based violence is any harmful act directed at individuals based on their gender, gender identity, or gender expression. It affects everyone, but certain groups—such as young women, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, and Indigenous communities—are at higher risk.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is a day to honour the lives lost to anti-trans violence, discrimination and hatred. Established in 1999, this day reminds us of the ongoing epidemic affecting the trans community. Trans people deserve to feel safe everywhere—at the pregame, on the dance floor, at the afters, and in every corner of life.

In Canada, the state of trans rights is alarming, with sweeping anti-trans legislation threatening the safety and equity of our community. Community must stand together to fight against these ongoing injustices.

As part of the rave scene, we must prioritize creating spaces where everyone can express themselves freely without fear. Ways you can be an ally:

Educate yourself about trans issues and the specific challenges faced in the community.

Support and amplify the voices of trans artists, trans creators, trans-owned businesses, trans-led organizations and initiatives that advocate for trans rights and safety.

Speak up against discrimination and violence, both online and in-person.

Ensure events and event spaces are inclusive and safe spaces for everyone. Having a code of conduct & removal procedures, accessible gender neutral washrooms, avoiding gendered language in ads/promo/pricing, and ensuring queer representation in staffing and security can be great ways to improve queer safety.

Let your grief turn to action. Mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living!
