Qui c’era l’oceano. Nel 2005 il governo di Singapore decide di evolvere il concept nazionale da “Città Giardino” a “Città in un Giardino”. L’anno successivo, dopo un concorso internazionale d’architettura che ha visto sfidarsi oltre 70 progetti da tutto il mondo, viene selezionato il progetto definitivo. 101 ettari di terra hanno preso il posto del mare, nella zona di Marina South, per dar vita a un parco urbano aperto ufficialmente il 29 giugno 2012. I Supertree, alti fino a 50 metri, e le serre Flower Dome e Cloud Forest lavorano come un ecosistema vivente, alimentando e coordinando la raccolta dell’acqua piovana, la ventilazione naturale e la produzione di energia fotovoltaica. Si è trattato di uno dei primi e più imponenti interventi al mondo capaci di fondere ingegneria avanzata e botanica, ridefinendo per sempre il rapporto tra metropoli e natura.

Where this garden stands, there was once only ocean. In 2005, the Singapore government decided to evolve its national concept from a “Garden City” into a “City in a Garden.” The following year, an international architectural competition featuring over 70 submitted entries from around the world led to the selection of the winning design. 101 hectares of land took the place of the sea in Marina South to create an urban park that officially opened on June 29, 2012. The Supertrees, rising up to 50 meters high, and the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories operate like a living ecosystem, powering and driving rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation, and solar energy production. It was one of the world’s first and most massive achievements in merging high-level engineering with botany, permanently redefining the relationship between the city and nature.

Fino al 2019 nel Terminal 1 dell’aeroporto Changi c’era solo un parcheggio all’aperto. Un non-luogo di passaggio per viaggiatori. Poi il cemento è stato sostituito da una cupola di vetro e acciaio, sotto la quale si trova la Shiseido Forest Valley, un’oasi bioclimatica con oltre 2.000 alberi e migliaia di piante. Al centro l’HSBC Rain Vortex. Con 40 metri d’altezza, è la cascata al coperto più alta del mondo e non è una semplice attrazione scenografica. Secondo i progetti ufficiali, è un capolavoro di ingegneria sostenibile: cattura fino a 37.000 litri al minuto di acqua piovana dalle piogge tropicali di Singapore, riutilizzandoli per l’irrigazione della foresta e per raffreddare naturalmente l’aria circostante tramite nebulizzazione. Rappresenta la visione di Singapore come “Città Giardino”, un punto d’incontro tra la tecnologia e la forza della natura. Oggi, dove una volta sorgeva un parcheggio, i viaggiatori si fermano incantati a guardare i giochi di luce, ad ascoltare il suono dell’acqua, a respirare l’aria fresca della foresta. Un semplice scalo qui è un viaggio nel viaggio.

Until 2019, Terminal 1 at Changi Airport was home to nothing more than an open-air parking lot. An ordinary transit spot for travelers. Then it was replaced by a dome of glass and steel, housing the Shiseido Forest Valley, a biophilic oasis with over 2,000 trees and thousands of plants. At its center stands the HSBC Rain Vortex. 40 meters tall, it is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and far more than a simple visual attraction. According to official design reports, it is a masterpiece of sustainable engineering: harvesting up to 37,000 liters of rainwater per minute during Singapore’s tropical storms, reusing it to irrigate the forest and naturally cooling the indoor air through evaporative misting. It embodies Singapore’s vision as a “Garden City”, a meeting point between technology and the force of nature. Today, where a parking lot once stood, travelers pause in awe to watch the play of light, listen to the sound of water, and breathe in the fresh forest air. A simple stopover here is a journey within a journey.
