THE WEEK IN WOMEN: REBA RULES!

Reba McEntire is returning to NBC this fall for the third season of her latest hit sitcom HAOOY'S PLACE. The multimedia entertainment mogul stars in and serves as an executive producer of the popular series which debuted in October 2024. McEntire plays Bobbie, who inherits her father’s Knoxville, Tennessee, bar, Happy's Place, upon his death. After running the tavern for many years, Bobbie is less than thrilled when she learns she has a new business partner: Isabella, the much younger half-sister she didn't know she had until their daddy died.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK: A PLACE OF ABSENCE

As much as anything, director Marialuisa Ernst's heartbreaking documentary A PLACE OF ABSENCE is about what it means to be human -- to love and be loved, to believe that everyone has the same rights to freedom and happiness, and, when necessary, to be able to mourn in the event of loss. But for the women featured in the film, much of that meaning hangs painfully in limbo as they search tirelessly for their long-missing migrant children.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK: WINTER OF THE CROW

A bleak Warsaw winter that's made even bleaker by fear and intimidation is the backdrop to director Kasia Adamik's tense drama/thriller WINTER OF THE CROW. As it tells the story of an unwitting Englishwoman (Lesley Manville) whose visit to the Polish capital in December 1981 is thrown into chaos by the secret police's declaration of martial law, the film explores what it means to resist an oppressive regime.

SPOTLIGHT on Zoey Martinson, Trailblazing Filmmaker, THE FISHERMAN

Zoey Martinson refuses to believe a story about hardship has to look or sound like hardship. Her feature debut, THE FISHERMAN is a magical-realist comedy shot in Ghana, with a wisecracking talking fish, a riot of color, and a fishing community facing displacement -- and that story gets to be funny, vibrant, and fully human. Martinson goes to the places the Hollywood gatekeepers write off and finds the wit, the warmth, and the beauty that are there and turns up the volumn on them. She's built her career on her unique vision and style of storytelling. We can't wait to see what she does next.

Meanwhile, her creative spirit and success are inspiring. Read more at the link in our bio.

Kudos to Ngozi Onwurah, whose seminal WELCOME II THE TERRORDOME is dropping on Blu-ray via Criterion,

Nigerian-born British filmmaker Ngozi Onwurah’s trailblazing 1995 sci-fi feature Welcome II the Terrordome has been restored and will be released in October on Blu-ray via The Criterion Collection.

The first theatrically distributed British feature by a Black woman, the dystopian science fiction film furiously evokes a near future in which Black people are segregated within a slum called the Terrordome, where simmering violence and anger threaten to boil over in the wake of a young boy’s murder.

Named after an incendiary single by Public Enemy, the film, written and directed by Onwurah, uses its rap soundtrack to both comment on and drive its narrative, part of a sensibility in which American, British and African cultures collide and the past, present and future collapse.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK:
THE ART OF ADVENTURE

In THE ART OF ADVENTURE, director Alison Reid tells the globe-trotting tale of Robert Bateman and Bristol Foster, two longtime Canadian friends whose shared passion for nature and drive to see the world beyond North America led them on an 18-month odyssey across 50,000 miles and 19 countries in the late 1950s -- and, later, fueled their careers as passionate stewards of the environment. Their story is a joyful inspiration.
