Tahr hunting the Southern Alps 👇

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On the 3rd day of the hunt @luke_turner_93 discovered that I had left half of our food in the car… So we set out once again to try put a Chamois on the deck. We spent the morning pushing down below our camp to get eyes on a different part of the area, a few animals seen but impossible to get to. A pretty uneventful day led to us being fogged in and around 6pm we decided that was enough and opted for an early dinner. After getting back to camp, chucking the crocs on and firing up the Jetboil Luke tells me there’s a Chammy near camp and that I need to go have a crack! He tells me he’s a good one but I didn’t have time to look, the gear goes back on and I leg it up the hill, putting a ridge between us. Eventually I made it into 43 yards but no clear shot so I tried to get a touch higher, after a short time I was balancing on a heap or bush roots hanging off the side of the hill. I let the Nexxus infinity / Nix Sabre go from 40yd and seen it sail right through him with a quartering away shot and he disappeared out of sight. He only ended up going roughly 30 before going down! Absolutely stoked to get my first Chammy on the deck, but I had no idea he was a cracker like this until I actually laid my hands on him 😳
Safe to say we had plenty of food for the rest of the time, gotta say chammy is quite tasty 👌

We all have that 1 animal that stands out to us! Even after hunting a fair few other species interstate and overseas, the one that stands out and is special to me is this humble old goat! I have literally been going to this property since I was born and ever since I started hunting as a kid I always wanted a big goat. While I’ve shot a few quality goats over the years nothing compared, the feeling looking through the binos and just knowing this was 40+ made me so excited and very nervous 😂 this was 2017 and still yet to top it! #hunting #bowhunting #archery #hunter #hunt #goat #horns #huge #trophy #taxidermy #beautiful #giant #youtube #channel #australia #tusx #hoyt #arrow #broadhead # by @awhitaker_

We all know what it’s like to hunt a new unit for the first time, HARD-extra challenges of the unknown topography, weather, hunting pressure, animal density, and the list goes on and on. Now complicate those difficulties by adding a new species, a new area, a new state and a new country! Yes, you heard that accurately! @a.whitaker_ did all of that this year after moving here from Australia, and Aaron was also able to get a mule deer as well as this beautiful elk both with his bow. Well done, Aaron. So happy you for you and thanks for choosing.@sheridanskulls to do your euro mount by @awhitaker_

I always end up with mini obsessions that usually pair with a big obsessions until I have done it. This year a bull elk was paired with a grouse 😂
After 12hrs of packing my bull to the truck I was coming out with my camp and took the opportunity to shoot my first grouse. I was so worn out from the day I could barely draw my bow but we made it happen.. the kids loved a bit of fried dusky grouse for lunch 👌 by @awhitaker_

This hunt wasn’t about pulling the biggest rack out of the mountains but the experience and starting from scratch in a new country. I put all my effort into my archery elk tag and mule deer were pushed to the back of my mind. I started getting day trip opportunities so I decided to focus on mule deer in a new area. I’ve probably spent a total of 4 or 5 days hunting mulies and with only a few days left of season I was happy to tag out on my first buck. A 300yd shot with the 7mm PRC dropped him on the spot 🫡
plenty of meat and a lil rack for the kids bedroom
