Antonia Novello, MD, PhD, was the first woman and first Hispanic to serve as US Surgeon General. She earned her MD from the University of Puerto Rico, studied nephrology at the University of Michigan, and practiced as a pediatrician before joining the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1978.

In 1979 she moved to the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Disorders at the National Institutes of Health where she helped draft the Organ Transplantation Procurement Act. She then became deputy director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. She earned her Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1982 and her Doctorate in Public Health also from Johns Hopkins in 2000.

When she was appointed as Surgeon General in 1990, she advocated for the health of young people and minorities – specifically campaigning against underage drinking, smoking, and drug abuse. Her work has also focused on AIDS awareness and health services for poor communities.

Support women in science on DAF Day.

In 2025, AWIS awarded over $170,000 in scholarships and grants to support women in science. Thousands of people have established Donor Advised Funds (DAF) to take advantage of tax benefits and grow their charitable giving impact. October 8 is DAF Day. Donor Advised Funds are like charitable savings accounts that let you contribute now, get the tax deduction, and then recommend grants to organizations like AWIS when you’re ready.

In 2025, AWIS supported women scientists with $106,000 in scholarships. If you hold a DAF account, consider recommending a grant to AWIS to help us continue to advance women in STEM. We’ve added DAF pay to our online donation form, and also accept other payment forms. Donate at the link in our bio.

When everything feels important, how do you decide what deserves the front burner? On November 12 at 12 p.m. ET, Tina McDermott introduces The Front-Burner Reset, a practical four-move framework for deciding what needs attention now, what can simmer, when to turn down the heat, and what can come off the stove. Participants will leave with practical strategies to protect focus and energy, navigate competing priorities, and make intentional choices without the guilt of trying to do everything at once.
