Traditional and historical bookbinding has been difficult to learn on my own, so I made the trek to Telluride to learn at the @americanacademyofbookbinding

I’m now returning every year to learn about conservation too. It’s a big commitment to attend so let me know if you have questions! I highly recommend applying for scholarships if you need financial aid.

Meet Chip, the director of @americanacademyofbookbinding in Telluride, Colorado 📔

Episode 4 of Awl About Bookbinding is now on YouTube! Chip walks us through the AAB bindery and shares his advice on affordable equipment for starting your own bindery at home.

He’s right, the classes are super intensive. I usually need naps after classes 😪 I’ve taken three so far and with each class I’ve gotten better at preparing myself so I can focus all my energy on binding! It’s a really rewarding experience. A few of you have reached out to ask for advice for first timers, I’d be happy to answer any questions! Would love to hear what you’ll be taking, maybe I’ll see you there :)

Do you want to how the rarest books of human history are preserved? I wanted to explore this world of bookbinding and visited @uclalibrary for an episode of Awl About Bookbinding.

Nicole Alvarado is a Book and Paper Conservator for UCLA Library's Preservation & Conservation Department, where she works on materials from the Library's Special Collections. She takes us on a tour of the preservation lab and shows us several centuries-old books and manuscripts! It was such a gift, I’m excited for you to see it all. No frass unfortunately 💩

Episode 3 premieres this Thursday Sept 11 at 10:00am PT! taken in UCLA by @awlaboutbookbinding

Some Japanese words I learned from @miyakoakai 💞

Also, it’s not rice paper!! It’s…
WASHI (Japanese paper)
HANJI (Korean paper)
LOKTA paper (Paper made of Daphne bush from Nepal)
XUANZHI (Paper originating from Xuan, China)
SAA paper (Paper made of mulberry bush from Thailand)
DÓ paper (Paper made of Rhamnoneuron balansae tree from Vietnam)
India is known for handmade cotton rag paper

I’m likely missing some but only Chinese paper uses a little bit of rice straw in the pulp. Rice paper is a Western misnomer when referring to Asian papers. It’s best say the material used or the culture it’s from! by @awlaboutbookbinding

What did you think about episode 2 of Awl About Bookbinding? What did you take away from Miyako’s wise perspectives? I’ve been working on a fine miniature book, inspired by Miyako’s work. With each artist I meet and with each episode we create, our conversation fuels my creativity!

I could use your help… if you enjoyed the episode, can you share it and send it around? I would love to reach more book lovers and binders and grow the bookbinding community through this show.

You’ve all encouraged me to keep learning and growing, and I hope Awl About Bookbinding can give you that same encouragement 🩷

My new YouTube series “Awl About Bookbinding” premieres this Friday!!! In the first episode, we’ll explore the differences between book arts and fine binding.

It’s been a few months in the making and @galan.films and I are ready to share it ✨

Some reflections that I recently shared on Patreon:

Since I finished writing my book, I was feeling quite lost and uninspired. It’s been hard to admit it. The book took everything out of me, and it was a long time until I regained my creative energy. I pushed through mud to continue making content and selling my handmade books.

It wasn’t until I attended the American Academy of Bookbinding when I felt an obvious shift in myself. This is what I’ve been looking for - a sense of community and camaraderie. It was more important than the learning itself. I was with people who also love making books and who inspired me to continue growing my artistry.

That’s where I met @insiyadhatt , our guest in the first episode. I discovered that she has amazing vision for patterns and creative book structures, and she’s excellent at storytelling with her artist books. She’s also very active in the US bookbinding community, so I wanted to pick her brain about her experiences.

Look out for the pilot episode on my YT channel this Friday morning pacific time! by @awlaboutbookbinding
