Being patient with your toddler gets hard by the 13th time they say it, because tension already has part of your body.

If you think their behaviour is where the yelling began, your guilt cycle will continue if that’s the only place you look. Kids are going to be kids.

Your jaw, your shoulders, or your hands. Everyone will be different. So tonight, when the noise increases, find your point of tension. That’s where co-regulation starts.

It happens, doesn’t mean you failed.

If you want something more, The Reactive Parent Reboot is free and the link’s in my bio. Start there.

Somewhere between the yelling and bedtime, you already decided you’re a bad mom.

When you react, do you believe you failed. If you do, by whose standard are you failing.

Now let’s try something different. How true is it that you are doing your best, as a human who is always growing. On a scale of 1 to 10.

Now get that belief to 10.

If a friend of yours is lying awake replaying tonight, send her this.

You know the room where the old you would’ve said yes. This is how I self soothe in mine.

The past version of me would have joined in. I don’t do that anymore. I count in my head. I breathe in and out, then I count one bead. And I pay special attention to my senses on each bead. It changes my hands and my breathing.

When the beads aren’t on me, I go to my heartbeat. When was the last time you connected to yours.

You’re standing right there with your kid, and your past keeps pulling you out of the room.

This one goes deep, so go gently.

What past moment in your life is preventing you from being present with your child. You don’t have to go all the way into it tonight. Just name it.

Save this for when you’re ready to go further. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @axelsemotionalfoundations

Years of work on yourself, and you still react. You thought you’d be able to stay present all the time by now.

A note: this one mentions losing my best friend and cutting contact with family.

Even after a few years of getting my presence back, I lost it again. It was gradual. And I have my moments. Coming back is the practice. Your attention is a racehorse, and your awareness is the rider.

Ask yourself this tonight. How comfortable are you being present.

Send this to the friend who thinks she should be past it by now.

Part of you is scared it’s too late to break the cycle and show your kid something different.

If you were to imagine bringing yourself back to a state of presence with your children, at what age do you think your child would start modelling present moment awareness.

Pick a number. If an age came to mind, that’s the part of you that already knows.

By the time the kids are asleep, you feel disconnected from your own body.

There’s one thing that never left. Tonight, before you sleep, put a hand on your chest and listen for a minute. Whether you focus on it or not, it will still beat.

Overstimulated in a loud house, and the harder you try to quiet your mind, the louder it gets.

Here’s what I do instead. I break down what’s happening inside me through my senses, and I watch the space in between it all. That’s where silence comes in.

Tonight, when it’s loud, look at the floor between you and your kid. That’s the space. Breathe, and let silence come into it.

Save this for the loud part of the night.

After a hard moment with your kid, you’re harder on yourself than you’d ever be on a friend.

When you react, what self-limiting belief comes up. And where did it come from.

Listen to that sentence again. Then think about how you were judged as a kid.

You lost your temper because something spilled, and now you’re calling yourself a terrible mom.

Think about how many times you snapped over something small before you had kids. I once snapped at a construction truck after fifteen minutes stuck in traffic. My schedule was being interrupted, something that deeply irritates me.

Next time, write down why the small thing your child did made you snap. Don’t think it through. Let your body write, and you might surprise yourself.

Save this for the next snap over something small.

Some nights you’re fully present with your kid. You just don’t know how you got there, so you can’t get back on purpose.

Name some things that help you bring yourself back into the present moment. A walk, or a song in the car. Then notice how each one brings you to that state. That’s your why.

Once you know why it works, you can come back on purpose.

Save this and make your list tonight. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @axelsemotionalfoundations
