🗳️ Janeese Lewis George won Tuesday’s election, per the AP. The biggest task ahead? Rebuilding D.C.'s economy.

📉 BY THE NUMBERS: D.C. lost 45,600 jobs through August, 62% of them government positions. The city is not projected to return to pre-DOGE growth rates until fall 2030.

🏠 THE BIG PICTURE: Lewis George has proposed building 72,000 homes in five years and a childcare-for-all subsidy. The subsidy could be difficult to fund amid a projected $680 million budget gap.

🔍 WHAT’S NEXT: She’ll assemble a transition team and fill key roles, including police chief and schools chancellor. Major challenges include restarting projects such as Union Station’s redevelopment and attracting companies to replace lost federal jobs.

D.C.'s favorite pastime is here: cheap drinks and free eats paired with election results.

🍔 THE FREEBIE: The first 50 guests @catahouladc in Navy Yard score a free cheeseburger po'boy. Democracy is delicious.

🍹 DRINK THE RESULTS: Win, lose or draw, @madhatterdc in Dupont has $5 margaritas and $10 smash burgers with fries starting at 5pm.

📺 WATCH: @unionpub $9 "Midterm Massacre" cocktails are inspired by Senate races. At @barreldc, cast your vote for $14 blue or red cocktails during the returns.

🦆 DUCK THE DRAMA: Not @sollystaverndc, where the campaign behind D.C.'s foie gras ban is throwing a free watch party starting at 7pm.

Federal monitors will be at polling places in Prince George’s, Prince William and Fairfax counties Tuesday, amid concerns about potential voter intimidation.

🔎 THE BIG PICTURE: The Justice Department will send 1,000 monitors to polls across the country, far more than in previous elections. The unusually large deployment is drawing scrutiny amid the Trump administration’s repeated claims of widespread voter fraud.

📍 YES, BUT: Prince William County officials said federal monitors won’t be allowed inside polling places. The DOJ said it would send monitors to observe from outside.

🏛️ D.C. WATCH: Meanwhile, the D.C. Board of Elections asked the National Guard to stay away from voting locations after guard members were spotted next to a Foggy Bottom ballot box last month.

A new report asks D.C.'s next mayor to seek control of more parks.

About 90% of D.C.'s parkland — think Rock Creek Park, but also empty grassy triangle lots in your neighborhood — is owned by the National Park Service. It's a bureaucratic logjam for creating new community parks.

Getting more of that land in local hands would help "to make our parks more beautiful, welcoming, and usable," say the report's authors, former mayor Anthony Williams and Council member Matt Frumin.

Downtown D.C.'s next chapter could include a wellness district, an international food hall and a transportation loop for tourists.

🏙️ DOWNTOWN PLANS: City officials announced new neighborhood-level proposals at a conference last week, like World Table, a global food market and event space.

💪 PLUS: A wellness district near Foggy Bottom, featuring a luxury wellness hotel, a destination fitness center or spaces for medical innovation.

💡 REALITY CHECK: Many of these ideas are still just that — ideas — and much of downtown's redevelopment will depend on the new mayor and congressional delegate working with the federal government.

⚖️ FOIE GRAS FACE-OFF: D.C.'s proposed foie gras ban could be headed to court before it ever takes effect.

One of America's biggest foie gras producers is already consulting lawyers about a potential challenge if voters approve Initiative 86 on Tuesday.

💵 FOLLOW THE MONEY: D.C. estimates enforcement will cost $314,000 over four years — money that hasn't been budgeted. The producer warns that legal bills could run much higher.

🏛️ THE PRECEDENT: A similar ban in NYC has been tied up in court for years. @hudsonvalleyfoiegras and other farms helped stall that law, and it's now eyeing D.C.

🦆 THE OTHER SIDE: @proanimaldc isn't backing down. "We're not worried," the campaign tells Axios, arguing that a New York farm "doesn't get to overrule" D.C. voters.

📅 WHAT'S NEXT: If approved, the ban is slated to take effect July 1, 2027. But the fight over foie gras may be far from over.

D.C.'s hottest bakeries might be hiding inside your neighbor's house — and scoring their pastries can feel like winning the lottery.

🔥 THE FRENZY: At Capitol Hill's @thepastrypedaler, lines snake around the block, online pastry drops sell out in 30 seconds, and customers have waited up to 90 minutes for German-style treats.

🥐 WHY IT MATTERS: Cottage bakeries are booming, bringing fresh bread, creative pastries and a side of community to D.C. neighborhoods — without the overhead of a storefront.

🍞GOING STRONG: @capitoljillbaking Jill Nguyen started by giving away sourdough to homebound neighbors during the pandemic. Six years later, her scallion focaccia and cardamom buns have a devoted following. Pickups double as neighborhood hangouts, and her preorder model means she hasn't tossed a baked good in over four years.

🏛️ WHAT'S NEW: D.C. cottage bakers can now sell wholesale to licensed food businesses, and renters can apply for home occupation permits, too.

😋 FOOD NEWS: Caviar-topped churros, $10 martinis and a dreamy courtyard? Yes, please. @barnuestrodc opens Wednesday in Navy Yard.

🍴 DIG IN: @coladashop founder Daniella Senior puts her own spin on the Latin-European restaurants she loved growing up in the Dominican Republic. Think truffled yuca beignets, tamarind-glazed chicken and a sweet plantain sundae.

🌿 THE VIBE: A retro-chic dining room and Spanish-style interior courtyard make this a spot for date nights, family dinners and lingering over another round.

🍸 HAPPY HOUR: Deals are available throughout the restaurant, not just at the bar. Snag $11 cocktails or go all out with a seven-course dinner for two ($120 total). Not your typical beer-and-fries special.

November and December are crunch time for President Trump's D.C. projects.

Several projects face construction milestones and design reviews in the coming weeks, as critics worry the admin will accelerate plans before Republicans potentially lose control of Congress.

"Prepare for a tsunami of activity," said Charles Birnbaum, head of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, which has joined groups suing the Trump administration over the Kennedy Center and other projects.

Forget the tricks and treats. The 38th annual Miss Adams Morgan Pageant is bringing outrageous costumes, fabulous queens and plenty of D.C. humor to the Washington Hilton on Halloween night.

👑 WHY IT MATTERS: The only-in-D.C. tradition draws around 1,500 revelers — but for decades, it was something of a well-kept secret.

📜 THE BACKSTORY: Born in 1988, the pageant was more than a party. It offered a space for self-expression and community at a time when being associated with drag could carry serious risks.

💖 DRAG FOR GOOD: Organizer @dupontsocialclub has raised more than $500,000 for LGBTQ+ causes, supporting 34 local organizations. This year's beneficiary is Whitman-Walker Legal Services.

🎟️ IF YOU GO: The wigs fly Saturday, Oct. 31, at 8pm. Pageant tickets start at $100, or join the cocktail party for $25.

D.C. council members didn't sound sold on spending $300 million in public funds to put a roof over Audi Field and expand the stadium.

D.C. United says a bigger, covered stadium could bring more concerts to D.C. and support the growth of women's sports.

But with $1.5 billion in taxpayer money already committed to the Commanders stadium and Capital One Arena's modernization — and new upgrades proposed for Nats Park — council members questioned if the Audi Field expansion was really necessary.

⛴️ There have long been talks about running ferries on the Potomac and Anacostia, but concerns like costs and feasibility previously waylaid plans.

YES, BUT: Now the idea could finally be gaining traction, thanks to a new type of boat service that's cheaper, more sustainable and faster.

⚓️ HOW IT WORKS: Hydrofoil ferries are small electric boats with underwater wings that lift the hull and reduce wake, potentially allowing them to move faster on local rivers.

📍 POTENTIAL STOPS: Georgetown, Buzzard Point, Navy Yard, Old Town and National Harbor are among the locations being considered.

⚠️ REALITY CHECK: The proposal is still hypothetical. Costs, funding, routes, ticket prices and infrastructure needs remain under study.
