You’re invited! Birds,bikes and art people…

All month long, the Birds & Bikes exhibition will be up at Axis Gallery! It officially opens Saturday, October 10 from 5-8 pm so pop in during your Second Saturday adventures. It’ll be up through 11/1.

For this show, I got to collaborate with @lindaclarkjohnson to create Pathways, a 4’ x 6’ cyanotype and mixed media piece.

We had a blast making it, working together at each stage to bring it to life. From collecting elements like branches, plants, and even trash from North Natomas Regional Park, to exposing and developing the cyanotype, to deciding the design of the woven paper pathway that we included. - It was fun!

The overall theme for the show is a tie-in to the upcoming Birds and Benches project, which installs artist-designed public benches across the park.

And, all of the art in the show is the result of collaborations between artist duos whose aim was to explore the poetic intersections of avian flight and human motion.

Thank you to our curators, Heather Hogan and Cara Gregor, who organized this show and got us going months ago!

Participating artists include: Antonia Price, Sokthea Chan, Linda Clark Johnson, Nathan Coldwater, Kate Farrall, Sandy Fong Whetstone, Cara Gregor, Jordin Hinton, Heather Hogan, Maris Kaplan, Tanya Lieberman, Elise Mahan, Lo’Vonia Parks, Judy Coates Perez, Samuel Rose, Michelle Sharf, and Alex Williams.

Location: Axis Gallery, 625 S Street
When you purchase this piece, 10% will be donated to SABA, a great organization that supports getting people bicycling.

More information here: https://axisgallery.org/home-3/exhibitions/birds-bikes/

I hope you get to enjoy this special exhibition! Linda and I are really happy with how the piece turned out and are excited for you to see it!🐦‍⬛🚲😊

Axis Gallery is proud to present “Open Studios” by Kenna Doeringer

“I was inspired to combine two passions, creating art and literature. The printed word today is becoming a dinosaur with the advent of e-books and the closing of book stores all over the country. In my search for which books to use and what kind of art to make out of them, I began a journey that led me and my art in ways I had never imagined. The work produced is not an interpretation of the story, but a reflection on the influence it has had on me. Every piece I start and finish is heartbreaking and exciting, a book is destroyed, but art is created.”

Axis Gallery is pleased to present Surface Tension by Roma Devanbu.

In her first exhibit exclusively of photographs, we see her hungry painters eye hunting and gathering brush marks, patterns and textures in the wide world around her. The photographs in this exhibition are records of a physical world in which materials collide, collaborate, stretch, erode, rust, scratch, drape, freeze and embrace.

The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the gallerist/photo historian Alan Klotz and the photographer/educator Philip Perkis. Devanbu first met and studied with Klotz and Perkis while earning her MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in the mid 1980’s.

Roma Devanbu is a long time member of Axis Gallery and its current president. She is a studio resident at Verge Center for the Arts. Her work is in private and corporate collections in the US and abroad and can be seen in many Northern California hospitals. For more info visit her website at roma.devanbu.com.

Axis Gallery is pleased to present Who are Orientals: Magenta Realism by Sharon Tsao.

About forty years ago, when I first came to California, I was told that I was “Oriental.” I was also told that certain tables and chests were “Oriental,” and that a particular decorative style was likewise considered “Oriental,” even though these things looked unfamiliar to me.

The works in this exhibition are largely produced in what I was told is an “Oriental” style or manner. They originate from dried Boston ivy vines resembling twisted tree branches, gathered after years of growth without human intervention and coated with an artificial magenta surface.

-

Sharon Tsao is a sculptor, art historian, and educator whose work explores the intersections of nature, memory, cultural identity, and material transformation. In this body of work her pieces are suspended between objecthood and theatricality, ruin and ornament, realism and hallucination, and ultimately propose a different understanding of realism itself.

Join us for a Chinese Knot-Making Workshop for cultural celebration and historical reflection with the 1882 Foundation, Muzi Li Rowe, and Fiona K. Lau.

Workshop 1: Friday, June 12, 2026 | 5:00–8:00 PM
Workshop 2: Thursday, June 18, 2026 | 5:00–8:00 PM

Admission is free and RSVP is required. Light refreshments and drinks will be available. LINK IN BIO FOR TICKETS!

Chinese knotting (中国结) is an ancient form of folk art that is typically made with fabric cords and is used as festive decoration. Traditionally made from cotton and silk cords, various cord materials can be used to make these intricate designs, including nylon, hemp, waxed cotton, leather, and more. In conjunction with Fiona K. Lau’s After Nature exhibit, we are invited to re-examine our relationship with surrounding physical goods through repurposing their use. In a time where more increasingly feels less, we are reminded that we already have the resources we want around us. Whether it be old cables or cut-up yoga mats, this workshop aims to bring a different sense of life to discarded, forgotten, or menial objects.

These three-hour workshops will include a brief history of Chinese knotting, live demonstrations on knot designs, and the opportunity for attendees to make their own décor. taken in Axis Gallery by @axisgallery

Axis Gallery presents Immoral Until Profitable by Kenneth Jordan @kennethjordan.art

June 5th - 28th, 2026
2nd Saturday Reception: June 13, 5–8 PM

The exhibition explores the history of Jazz music, one of America’s greatest artistic innovations, and the cultural contradictions surrounding it. Born in New Orleans, Jazz was once criticized by politicians and religious leaders who viewed it as immoral and dangerous because of its ties to Black culture, nightlife, improvisation, and changing social norms. Over time, the same music that was once rejected became widely celebrated and commercialized, often without equal credit or opportunity for the artists who created it.

Through vibrant visual storytelling, Immoral Until Profitable examines the recurring American pattern: reject, resist, rebrand, monetize. taken in Axis Gallery by @axisgallery

Axis Gallery presents After Nature, a solo exhibition by Fiona K. Lau.

June 5th - 28th, 2026
2nd Saturday Reception: June 13, 5–8 PM

In After Nature, Fiona K. Lau examines our increasingly mediated relationship with the natural world through a series of paintings and installations that navigate the space between digital fascination and ecological crisis. The exhibition takes its title from Jedediah Purdy’s book, which explores how nature as a notion of pure, untouched wilderness no longer exists—if it ever did—and asks how genuine kinship can be forged in an era when human influence has transformed every ecosystem and the internet shapes our environmental consciousness.

The works in this exhibition embody this search for connection through their very making. They function as palimpsests, layering diverse sources—personal records, Chinese literati painting, Japanese manga and pop culture, internet-sourced photographs, and AI-generated images and texts—into compositions where paint and line, figure and ground, shift and slip against one another. Strange reactions emerge between mark-making, layered imagery, fluid space and surfaces, the invisible and the visible, and emergence and disappearance in dialogue. They mirror our contemporary relationship with nature—mediated, fragmented, yet resonant.

After Nature offers neither solutions nor nostalgia but rather a contemplative space to reconsider how we see, know, and care for the more-than-human world in an age of digital saturation and ecological transformation. taken in Axis Gallery by @axisgallery
