Spring is finally here. I’m so excited about the weather changing and seeing flowers bloom.

This photo is part of a series titled “Coming Through” it features various double exposures taken on film and is inspired by the work of Kehinde Wiley.
Double exposures can be tricky so I was excited to see how this lined up ✨

Double exposure photography layers two images into a single frame, allowing separate moments, places, and feelings to exist at the same time. In Ayanah George’s work, that layering feels especially meaningful. The photographs hold beauty and complexity together—what’s visible, what’s hidden, and what can sometimes be difficult to name.

I’m highlighting a few of the available works currently on view, but there’s so much more to experience in person.

Double Exposure is on view at DC Arts Center through October 30. If you haven’t seen it yet, come spend some time with the work.

What happens to the feelings we don’t have language for yet?

That question sits quietly underneath Double Exposure.

In her artist statement, Ayanah George writes about making photographs during periods of profound grief and shame, but also during moments of immense joy and celebration that she kept to herself. She speaks about compartmentalizing as a way of moving forward—and the isolation and disconnection that can come with it.

That emotional push and pull is at the center of this exhibition.

The photographs are beautiful, but the story behind them is layered. They hold what was visible and what was being carried privately at the same time.

I’m incredibly excited to share Ayanah’s inaugural solo exhibition and a body of work that is so visually stunning.

I’m honored to announce Double Exposure, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Washington, D.C. based photographer Ayanah George, curated by Audra Lee, on view at The DC Arts Center from August 28–October 30.

Working across film and digital photography, George creates images that are intimate, feminine, and quietly charged. Her work uses beauty not as a surface, but as an entry point into memory, emotional survival, and the parts of our inner lives we often keep concealed.

Double Exposure explores the art of avoidance: the ways we create, perform, soften, distract, and preserve ourselves while moving through heartbreak, uncertainty, and change. Through layered photographic imagery, candid audio reflections, and delicate installation elements, the exhibition invites viewers into the space between what is seen and what is withheld.
